Can I get time off during an internship?

I’ve got a buddy who will be getting married sometime late in my internship and they asked if I could be in their wedding party. Do you think there is any hope or it would just come across as uncommitted? Should I ask now or closer to when the internship starts? Interning in CB (within CIB) during the summer 2026. Would just take off a Friday and Sunday (protected Saturdays).

Based on the most helpful WSO content, taking time off during an internship can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. Here’s what you need to consider:

  1. Timing and Communication: If you know about the wedding in advance, it’s best to bring it up early. Mentioning it closer to the start of the internship or during the onboarding process shows transparency and gives your team time to plan around your absence.

  2. Criticality of the Event: Major life events like weddings, graduations, or funerals are generally seen as valid reasons to request time off. However, you should be prepared to explain the importance of the event, especially if it’s for a close friend or family member.

  3. Professionalism and Commitment: While some might view taking time off as uncommitted, others on WSO have emphasized the importance of balancing life priorities. For example, skipping a sibling or immediate family wedding might reflect poorly on your personal values. However, you should still make an effort to minimize the impact of your absence on the team.

  4. Flexibility and Effort: If you do take time off, ensure you’re proactive about making up for it. For instance, offer to work extra hours before or after the event to complete your tasks. This demonstrates your commitment to the internship while respecting your personal obligations.

  5. Team Dynamics: Some WSO users suggest that the reaction to such requests depends on the team and culture. If you’re working with understanding colleagues, they might be more accommodating. However, in high-pressure environments, even a short absence could be frowned upon.

In summary, it’s worth asking for time off, but do so early and professionally. Frame it as a rare, important event and show your willingness to ensure your work doesn’t suffer.

Are they getting married on Saturday? Is this IB? What job are you working? You left out like all the info.
