Commercial loan underwriting of any size the key to many lending careers?

The question says is it all. Are the skills gained from underwriting debt, even if its for small business, transferable to most things?

I ask because I don't see many entry level underwriting jobs at bigger banks, however I do see quite a few at non-bank lenders that cater towards small businesses. The alternative to this is to do some sort of credit risk analyst position at a normal non-BB bank. In the future I'd like to explore some sort of alternative credit.

What do you mean by general banking skills? Being able to analyze financials and manage relationships? I can do both as a general "credit analyst" but as an underwriter I get to "underwrite." I know everyone structures departments differently but the "underwriter" seems to get more of responsibility in decision making.
