I recently wrote a new cover letter (recently graduated). I have a great interest in developing a career within the Capital Market communities. Could anyone spare a few minutes reading my cover letter (I'll pm with attachment) and provide a few tips for everyone in the comments in what employers would like to see within a Cover Letter ? How useful is Cover Letter to help you get pass screening? Can it help you get first round Interview? Could anyone within Equity or Debt Capital Markets spare a few insights about the industry itself?

My name is xyz, I graduated from xyz University in May 2012 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. I came across this opening for a Analyst position at xyz's debt capital market through [Xyz}. Through my previous experiences, I've gained a strong understanding of the capital markets, researching industry statistics, and creating presentations for clients and team members to source the best possible deals to clients.
As a summer associate at xyz Capital last summer, I prepared multiple financial models and presentations for our managing partner to pitch a variety of solutions for our clients to raise capital effectively. I've participated in a significant amount of deal calls to gain an understanding of how clients needs are best met under pressured environments. Although I was a summer associate, I spearheaded marketing initiatives to result in 33% higher deal volume and opened the company to a new array of clients. During my senior year at xyz University, I lead a group of five students in the CFA Research Challenge where we evaluated a publicly traded company, and created a detailed pitch book for the CFA Institute community. We advanced to be a finalist for the state of xyz, where we had to give a ten minute presentation before a panel of three judges.
I am quite impressed by xxx Debt Capital Markets' team because it exposes you to both client facing and relationship building side along with analyzing the capital markets. This opportunity plays to my strengths of developing relationships and analytical skills.

I feel every Cover Letter looks the same, but how do you really differentiate yourself?
Too long. I couldn't finish it. Nobody gets a job from the cover letter...I suggest shortening it.
Should the cover letter focus on your great achievements or relevant experiences toward the job you're applying to?

I didn't even graduate yet, but applied for a good amount of internships before landing one at a VC firm so take my advice with a grain of salt. For most of my cover letters (usually cold emails), I just try to cram all the relevant and INTERESTING achievements/about me as soon as possible In my first paragraph I mentioned GPA/honors/focus on alt investments/studied at LSE (I go to a non-target so I thought they can help catch eyes) in almost list like fashion without it coming off as awkward.
Overall the top paragraph was short, and my basic goal was just to get them to get to the middle paragraph, where I briefly told them what I wanted, in this case a summer position. I ended the letter with what I can do for them, why I fit, and how they can reach me. Overall took about 30-40 seconds to read /skim.
I found it pretty difficult to start the first part though without coming off as douchey, maybe I'm worse at writing cover letters than most people, but that my experience with it.
