I learned sign language when I was younger and I am still somewhat fluent. But it was a variant of British Sign Language, and not American (those two are different).

My wish has always been to continue learning it and apply it, but I don't have any friends with a hearing impairment.

Technically, everyone should learn this because it is a beautiful language and most of our parents will, most likely, be hard of hearing in the future.

The basic elements of sign language are easy to learn, being fluent is a different story. It depends on the person learning it.

basic conversation: about 90 days (very basic)
more fluent: six to nine months

I was already native or fluent in multiple languages when I learned this.

What am I struggling with:
Complex scenarios and words, like most topics we discuss on WSO. I couldn't explain how an early stage startup has a higher valuation. Or how Tesla uses digital twins as a feedback loop.

Ah yes, hitting on deaf chicks. Smooth move buddy. It's brilliant, really.
