i hate this self important crap. they probably want him on camera so they can ask him stupid questions and look good for sticking it to the rich guy. the thing is he's alot more down to earth and humble etc than blankfein so i dont know if "joe 6-pack" is going to be so thrilled that congress is harassing buffet.
they should call up all the other institutions that invested in the related companies. I bet that would have a bunch of pension funds there...but somehow i dont think they'll call them because that isnt going to get them reelected.
this is pretty disgusting.
Honestly, both Buffett and the politicians are being self-important, but I really have to side with Washington here. When congress asks you to come and testify, you're expected to go; it just comes with being an American. Yes, it'll take some time out of his schedule, which he's allegedly sensitive about (1), but I imagine he can find a spare 24 hours somewhere. Yes, Berkshire Hathaway didn't play a significant role in the financial crisis, but that doesn't mean Buffett shouldn't testify; people testify all the time to congress about things they aren't responsible for, because if you want to have an efficient government, it helps if they can understand what's going on.

Yea, like having Buffett testify is going to make a difference about anything. It's all a circus, that's our political system. People talk about Democracy and Socialism, Communism and Fascism when it's really just a joke. Efficiency in this government? Hah, surely you jest. I used to be someone who believed that there were good people in government, but there isn't. There's only three types of people in politics: 1) the moochers, 2) the looters, 3) the oblivious.
Screw helping out any of them and this idea of "nationalism". I'm gonna get for me and my friends and family, the people I know, other than that good fuckin luck.
And another thing, if this was a government that really does care, they wouldn't waste a second of his time that he spends making the US dolla dolla bills yall.
I definitely agree that all the political machinations in all these congressional hearings are largely a charade, and just another poignant display of inefficiency of legislators, but at the same time, Warren Buffett is still an American and still has the same responsibility to make civil contributions when called upon. He may not have caused the financial crisis, but his position in the American economy gives him a perspective few others could imagine on the topic of causes and possible preventative measures for the future. He shouldn't have needed a subpoena to share a little wisdom. Hardly the "oracle of omaha" image he's tried to foster.
They asked him to show and he politely declined because he knew the hearing would just be another clusterfuck of political grandstanding and gross incompetence.
Political grandstanding and gross incompetence are the fundamental tenets of modern democracy. We vote (I use "we" loosely as I'm not American) and choose to live in such a country despite knowing that the whole "clusterfuck" accomplishes nothing. Buffett's still an American just the same as anyone else, it's his responsibility to join the proverbial circus. In fact, it would be nice to hear the old man speak frankly about the crisis without the self-righteous partisan overtones you get from everybody else in the hearings.
