Golf NYC
Incoming An1 here. I love playing golf and want to keep improving. Any suggestions on where to practice? Need something cheap and I’m willing to pay for a membership somewhere if it makes sense.

You really think that you will have time to golf? Bro is not Patrick Bateman.

I’m a 1-2 handicap golfer that barely plays anymore (much to my own disappointment) and here are my thoughts:
- I’d probably temper your expectations on playing a lot of golf at the start. I think it’s more important to get settled, learn your group, understand your work expectations, etc. I’m very fortunate to be in a group with reasonably good balance and culture, but I still find it difficult to get out on the course. If you’re at a total sweatshop, I’d prioritize your own physical/mental well being over golf or anything else, which you may come to realize is actually much lower on your priority list.
- I’ve kept telling myself every new season that I’m finally going to get back into it and it’s difficult to build any momentum. I tell people on paper in a low single digit handicap, but realistically when you play a few times a year with multi-month gaps between rounds, it’s impossible to be sharp all the time. Most of the time I’ve finally found a groove when a single round or two is over and then I don’t play for a while. These days, my main opportunity to play is during client rounds and fortunately I’m in a position now where I can usually manage 3-4 a year. I’m from westchester and my parents are still based out there, so I can travel an hour and a half or so to a range/putting green the weekend before ahead of any of those events. If you live in the city and have no immediate connection to the surrounding suburbs, I’d recommend the below:
- If you have the means, moving into a luxury building that has a simulator should be a game changer. I’ve been in the city for almost 4 years now and I’m moving out of my first building into a new building that has one. I can’t personally speak to it yet, but I’m hoping I can keep some feel and form between rounds. Unfortunately, my short game plan these days is to just Texas wedge everything and hope for the best (open to suggestions)
- If you really are dead set on playing, I personally have never looked into any golf practice facilities or other recreational things in the city. I think your best bet is looking at the closest suburb you can access and finding a cheap range.
