Gyms and Prices

About to start full-time and was looking at joining gyms.  Which one do you guys think is worth it and what prices are reasonable for a first-year analyst?  Was looking at Equinox but not sure if it is worth the price, and do BBs get discounts?

Same situation: I tried out a few gyms and decided on crunch which was 75$ and 80 for multiple locations. NY sports club was a bit cheaper I believe but limited locations, blink is the cheapest by far but wasn’t the place for me. Equinox was just too expensive even with my bank’s (also BB) discount (should be able to look this up online for your bank/ask ppl in your group). Amenities aren’t great at crunch but didn’t want to shell out for equinox especially since I’m anticipating to not be able to have a workout routine/will be doing very quick in and outs. Most places offer free day passes so just go in a few and see how you like them.

I used to do equinox when I lived in buildings with no gym and justified it simply by the fact that their locker rooms/shower and literally always sparkling clean. There is nothing worse than having that slime feeling on the shower floor or seeing hairs/unidentifiable pieces of matter on the floor at the lockers. Also when I was a member, at least at the rock plaza location, they had gym clothes available for use which eliminated my need to bring them from home.. but they got rid of it like six months after I joined.

Be honest with yourself on how often you would go (or be able to go).  If you're at a sweatshop that doesn't allow you to go consistently (multiple times a week) then I don't think it's worth paying the price tag for Equinox/Lifetime. Although the service and quality is worth it for people who go often.

Blink is a great price point but for that reason it gets way too packed and therefore wouldn't recommend.

I found Crunch to be the "best of both worlds" as a decent mid-tier option. Not crazy expensive, decent equipment, not that packed.

Equinox is worth it. If you’re in the West Village there is a gym with an outdoor roof deck pool. The only thing better and usually more expensive than Equniox is MMA gyms. I was a member at Equinox for 4 years.

I fought myself for so long to get an Equinox membership. At the end of the day, I realized it's well worth it for probably two important reasons:

1) You can actually shower and get ready there and feel good about it (not only do you not feel gross doing it, but most locations are actually nice and clean enough to be a good experience). This is huge for me in being able to fit in my workouts around my work schedule

2) The atmosphere and clientele just puts me in a better frame of mind when I'm there which leads me to being more likely to actually get to the gym on days I'm not bursting with energy, and also usually makes me more likely to give my full effort once I'm there.  Going to the mid-tier gyms to save some money often ends in me getting there and 30 minutes in having to fight myself to not head home early

At the end of the day, what is it $3,000 a year? Not super meaningful in the long run but makes me happier and healthier.

I like their SoHo gym. Lots of eye candy. Every gym is different in little ways and I like the style of SoHo.

I would start at a place like Crunch for your first year. Get used to the city and in a routine and then see if you want to upgrade.

Equinox is a massive bite out of a first year budget budget and if you pay for it, you best be going there many times a week. Even the "corporate rate" from your bank is only around $30 a month cheaper. It's also incredibly packed most of the time. If you live next door to one and that's how you ger yourself to workout, that is fine, but otherwise I would just find a gym close to you (or even better, an apartment with a gym). No reason to start the lifestyle creep so early and on such a massive markup to other gyms.
