Hair Care Routine

I know this is kind of a girly topic but most guys would prefer when their hair looks good.  I am curious about what people do as part of their hair care routine?  I am sure it varies a lot.  Some guys might do nothing.  I spend way too much time on the hair.  I use a natural shampoo to wash it but I do not use a conditioner.  Then, I use some American Crew gel with a hair dryer.  More recently I started using American Crew Pomade after the hair is dry to give it a healthier, less frizzy look and partly wet look.  I could probably drop the gel completely and just go with pomade but the pomade is kind of expensive.

I use the gel primarily because I do not want the heat coming in direct contact with my hair and it is cheaper than the pomade.  I need to shampoo just about every day because I work out most days of the week and if I do not shampoo, my hair would a sweaty mess.

I'm a dude. Yeah first 3ish months I was super greasy while things were balancing out. Once my scalp realized it wasn't being attacked it started producing a healthy amount. I used to be super frizzly and poofy even with conditioner, that's all gone now. It's funny to look back and remember when I had to wash my hair at least every third day or I'd hate my life.

I've poo'd up a few times over the years since then when things were real nasty after long camping trips or spartan races and the like. I just have a dry scalp for a day or two then it's back to normal.

I like where this is going

Hair dryer dries out your hair and isn't too healthy for it - towel dry, more patting than rubbing.

No joke, one of the best things to do to add some body, color, and health to your hair is to lather it in olive oil twice a week and let it sit in there for like 20-30 mins.  Yes, olive oil.  Then wash out with water and shampoo the next morning.  Maybe it only works on my thick Italian hair but I know a lot of people that do it (family is from the italian section of the bronx so there might be a bit of group think looped in here).  But, no joke it works and I notice a difference when I don't do it.  I also have Aesop, sage and cedar stuff that I use once a week.

American Crew is great - I use the same (high shine medium hold pomade).  No need for gel if you are using pomade, just use the pomade as gel.  Don't shampoo more than you need to, 2-3 times a week.  And condition 2x as much as you shampoo per week.

Avoid wearing a hat a lot.  I only wear one for about an hour a day when I run/lift,

It seems logical that the dryer would have a negative impact but I am not sure about this.  I am older monkey and have been using a hair dryer since I was a teen which was a long time ago.  It is hard to say what works and what does not work because part of how well something works, is based on genetics.  I think with hair, proper care of the scalp is probably more important.  If you clog the pores in your scalp, your hair will not grow very well.

I believe you with the olive oil treatment but I have never tried it, though.  I do not think the number times you shampoo or condition matters nearly as much as what you using.  If you are using something natural, everyday can be fine.  If you are using product with harsh chemicals, a few times a week could be detrimental.

I almost never wear a hat.

Hair drier is probably giving you split ends.

Pre-covid: product every day, shampoo 1x/week (any more isn't great), very obsessive

Covid: don't do shit and wear hats most of the time

I have very wavy, but not quite curly hair. I use shampoo/ conditioner 3x per week. I don't use hair products (no gel). I haven't the top length in like 4 months, but trim the sides regularly. I also have a very simple hairstyle so there's that.

I use Pure Argan Oil Shampoo. My hair is a #4 so not much styling - towel dry. Pretty low maintenance.

What's your take on collagen supplementing for hair care?

I have never heard of collagen for the hair.  I use a collagen based moisturizer for my face.

Senior executive at my firm called me out in a zoom call in front of everyone and said every time he sees me, I have the "most majestic hair" aka I know wtf I'm talking about.

I take two showers a day but only shampoo and condition at night. I shampoo because I don't like sleeping with any product in my hair.

To style my hair in the morning, I towel and blow dry until it's slightly damp. Then I use probably a nickel size amount of American Crew Fiber. Will follow up with a bit more until I get the general shape I like. Then use Hanz de Fuko Claymation towards the front and on the sides because it's a much stronger hold. This stuff is more expensive than the American Crew, so I try to limit how much I use. Also does not wash out with just water which is why I use shampoo.

I'll then blow dry only front to back while running my fingers through the hair front to back. I have one of those cylinder brushes that you can get volume with but don't use it besides to make my hair puffy before I sleep.

I use a shit ton of product but it's matte and just looks like my hair is shaped. I've used pomades before but they give that wet look - don't mind that look and actually like it but prefer the matte when my hair is longer like it is now.

For shampoo/conditioner, I've found it doesn't really matter too much. I just bought a new brand from Kroger that actually works great but the shampoo smells super-girly and is overpowering.

What is American Crew Fiber?  I use America Crew Gel - heavy hold and American Crew Pomade - heavy hold.  I have used the regular AC pomade but found that it does not hold as well.  The only downside to the heavy hold pomade is that if I use too much, it becomes very difficult to get a brush through the hair.   A little bit goes a long way.  I end up using my fingers.  The heavy hold pomade does not give you a wet look.  The regular hold does, though.

I've got borderline kinky hair -- every AM I spray water on the surface and wet the tips of the hair. I then rub some leave in conditioner and spread it throghout the hair and do the same with a hair oil like argan oil. I excercise everyday so at night I fully wet it, condition it for 5 minutes, then dry it off before bed. I also use a slik pillowcase which helps my hair retain it's moisture making my morning routine effortless.

You guys are going to hate me.  Almost 40 but look 20.  Walmart knockoff head n shoulders daily.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

If you are going to flex like that, you should prove it and then you will get lots of compliments.  If I am online, I can be any height I want.  Today, I am going to go with 6'5 and I am going to be trying out for the Mets when the lock out ends.

I switch off on using a few things with thick, wavy hair: argan oil, coconut oil, and the wood shop serum by the longhairs (https://thelonghairs.us/collections/hair-care/products/argan-oil-hair-s…). I use the last one pretty much as a leave-in conditioner, but will also use a bit of the oils for the same purpose. I used to use pomades and experiment around with products, but I enjoy using more natural materials (which even just work way better), and I routinely get compliments on my hair from both ladies and guys.

If your hair is on the longer side, or if you’ve always wanted a long mane, try olaplex. Unlike other brands that add moisture/shine to the outer layers of your hair (not complex), olaplex works at the molecular level to strengthen the deep bonds that make up the hair (nerd alert). By doing this, you can finally grow your hair out to the length you’ve always wanted.

Olaplex products I’d recommend: No 3 hair perfector, No 4 shampoo, No 5 conditioner, No 6 bond smoother

Note: if you’re going to a high end salon, they’re probably using these products on you.

I am using biotin shampoo for my hair care routine and It can help hair feel more nourished and thicker.

Hair care can be a bit of an obsession for some of us, and it’s cool to talk about it. For me, I stick with a simple routine: I use a natural shampoo like you, but I’ve found that adding a conditioner makes a big difference, especially in winter when my hair tends to get dry. I used to rely on gel, too, but recently switched to pomade. Yeah, it’s pricier, but I noticed my hair looks healthier with it. Have you ever checked out Virgo de Novo? Their stuff is solid. A buddy of mine recommended it, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Hair care is important for everyone.
Common routines include regular washing, conditioning, using styling products, getting haircuts, and maintaining a healthy scalp.
Some also focus on diet, hydration, and protection from the elements to keep their hair looking good.

You use natural shampoo without conditioner, then style with American Crew gel and a hair dryer.
Recently, you've added pomade for a healthier, less frizzy look, though it’s a bit expensive.

It's great that you're taking care of your hair! Everyone's routine is different, but it sounds like you've found a good balance with the natural shampoo, gel, and pomade. The pomade definitely gives that polished, healthy look, but if you're looking to simplify or save a bit, experimenting with just the pomade could be a good move. It's all about finding what works best for you and makes you feel confident!

You learn by experimentation and making mistakes. I have dropped the gel as part of the haircare routine.  This change was one of the best ones that I have made.  After doing some research, I discovered that gel is horrendous for your hair.  I am not sure if pomade is actually good for the hair/scalp or not but I have concluded that it does not do any harm, unlike gel

My hair grows to be extremely thick and wavy. As a kid, I loved growing out my hair but now it would just look very unprofessional as I can look low key homeless if I don't get a haircut for a few months. Now, I try to get frequent haircuts (unemployed right now so ngl, I'm a bit lazy on this but I do get haircuts for events / interviews). I have a dry scalp / dandruff issues and have specific shampoos + conditioners I use for them.

Haven't done it but thinking about it, might start coloring my hair. I already noticeably have grey hair showing up, even in my beard.
