How frowned upon is taking a year off?

I've worked in Corporate Banking for about a year and a half and have decided this is not what I want to do going forward. I'm in a situation now where I have enough money through investing/trading crypto that I will be able to live for a few years without needing employment. If I take a year off to think about my next steps, how hard would it be to get employed again? I'm considering riding it out until my bonus then quitting. I have 0 interest in banking now and make more money trading (of course the market is hot now and that could end, but i have enough money built up to have a bit of a safety net).

18mo of experience with a few years gap is a risk to employers. You might have some issues. It’s better to work for a longer time and then take a sabbatical if you want later.

You may be on your own unless you decided to go to B school.

There are a few things that will help employers hire the person again:

- A track record of success.

- More education, putting yourself back in the recruitment.

- Good extracurriculars, maybe sitting on the board of a non-profit. Volunteering with the community.

- Glowing recommendations from your prior employer. If you’re going to quit, work your ass off and go out with a bang - amaze them - make them say to other employers “I wish he never left,” “you’d be lucky to have him.”

- If all else fails, hopefully you’re good at trading for a living. Keep your life in balance and try not to get burned out - it can be a lot of pressure running your own book.
