How to make friends to go out with?

So I moved to a new city, and my roommate and I are best friends but he started dating a girl and no longer really out since she claims his weekend evenings. I don't really like to go out 'hard' with work friends because there is something to be said about maintaining image, but outside of work and my college friend, I don't really have others to go out with. I was dating a girl but I fked it up so now it's just me along on weekends. I've never really gone out to bars alone, is that something you guys do?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some strategies to make friends and find people to go out with in a new city:

  1. Take Initiative:

    • Start by asking co-workers to lunch or drinks after work. This can help build relationships in a more casual setting.
    • Be consistent with your efforts and don't limit yourself to just one group of people.
  2. Join Repeated Activities:

    • Engage in activities that occur regularly, such as gym classes, workout sessions, rec leagues, or hobby classes (e.g., pottery, chess, coding).
    • Seeing the same people repeatedly can help foster friendships over time.
  3. Be Spontaneous and Social:

    • Throw yourself into social situations, even if it feels awkward at first. This can lead to meeting a lot of new people.
    • Consider joining social clubs or fitness classes like Equinox or SoulCycle.
  4. Use Online Platforms:

    • Websites like meetup.com can be useful for finding events and groups that match your interests. This can be an effective way to quickly build up a social circle.
  5. Go Out Alone:

    • While it might be intimidating, going out alone to neighborhood bars or events can help you meet new people. Start by talking to bartenders or other patrons.
    • Be friendly and open to conversations, even if it feels uncomfortable initially.
  6. Be Shameless and Step Out of Your Comfort Zone:

    • Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Talk to people in common situations, like waiting in line, and refer to shared experiences.
    • Most people are receptive to meeting new people, and breaking the routine can be refreshing.
  7. Maintain Friendships:

    • Actively work on maintaining the friendships you create. Friendships can slip away quickly if not nurtured.

By following these steps, you can build a new social circle and find people to go out with, even in a new city.

Not a retarded question, outside of school friends are hard to make. I agree in keeping work friends as work friends. Best way to make friends elsewhere is to join clubs of interest, and just put yourself out there. An alternative is to play the dating game, and friendzone (and then meet their friends and so on).
