How to use a better offer to leverage my current salary if I prefer my current job?

Will be getting a 40% increment if I moved, but my current firm provides high level exposure and I have a very kind and capable boss that I love working with/learning from.

I plan on going to my boss to ask for an increment to just match the offer, but I'm reserved on if it will actually happen as the budget is pretty tight (underperforming listed company), do I really have to just leave if that is the case?

Or should I reject the offer and trust myself to be able to land a better one in the future.

Some context: I'm currently in a corporate finance role for a listed company with a strong focus in the energy sector, the offer comes from a pre-ipo boutique advisory firm with a mediocre portfolio.
