Landed a Full-Time Offer in NYC last week... now I need to find housing for June 2020
Hi all, so finally made it to the big apple, and now I need to find housing. What are the cheapest neighborhoods in Manhattan? I'll be working near the South Side of Central Park / Columbus Circle area so I'd ideally like to work around there - would be willing to take the subway to the office as well.
Does anyone have any tips on cheap(er) areas to live in? Or any general tips on moving 1/2 way across the country to start my job?
Thanks!
June 2019?
Gonna be tough to find housing for three months ago.
In all seriousness, many of my friends working in finance down there live in Murray or Kips Bay. Williamsburg is also a pretty happening spot from what I hear.
Working in finance and living in Brooklyn is like mixing oil and water.
Sorry June 2020. fml
Congrats on the offer!! Is this for SA or FT?

you have a lot of options
upper west side or midtown west is gonna be the best combo of price / convenient commute. you could also look for apartments along the yellow N-R-Q line (get off at the 49th or 57th and 7th ave stop if you work where i think), which could expand your search to both the union square area, or astoria (17 min subway ride).
i personally would prefer the upper westside, because in your free time you can go for a run in central park...and its a nice area to live. Your commute to midtown will be about 20 minutes (most of that is walking / waiting for the subway).
NYC real estate doesn't generally rent that far in advance tho....you usually need to be looking to sign a lease about 2-3 months before your move in date (sometimes even less).
i suggest you monitor this street easy search over the next month to get an idea of how apartments come on/off the market.

also, i strongly suggest taking a trip to come see the apartments before actually signing a lease.
Thanks for the pointers! I certainly want to be near the park. I'm also not opposed to housemates, so with that info in mind, I will post on some FB groupsn about roomies looking for a place like I am.
If you're looking for a more active social life or like to go out I'd recommend East Village or LES, pricing is pretty good and tons of bars and young people.
