Life Coaching

Have been thinking about this for a while but saw another thread that prompted me to post - does anyone use a life coach to help them navigate life? One of the common themes I hear is that it's critical to figure out what exactly you want to do with your life/what impact you want to have, but that's a lot easier said than done; and what if you don't have that figured out by 25, or 35, or what if it's since changed and you need to recalibrate? Most people probably just hack it out on their own, but wondering if there's any value to these life coaching services to provide support in muddling through things.

A great coach would make a big impact no doubt. However there’s no real metric for rating a coach. I had a crappy coach before and dropped him eventually but not before really spending some dough. Seems like becoming a lifecoach is a common pursuit for a number of hippy people who wouldn’t know the inside of a boardroom if they fell face forward into one. Meanwhile my younger and infinitely more successful younger brother swears by his business coach. But then again I think that coach was assigned to him by his VC, and helped propel his company to multi decacorn status so maybe jokes on me.

There are metrics for rating a coach. I know a life coach who went to undergrad at HYP, then worked at a hedge fund, and finally was a life coach at Google for Google employees for over 10 years. You don’t get to be a life coach at Google for that long unless you’re good.

This life coach has been in the trenches and also has seen many aspects of people’s careers and more importantly has advised hundreds of C level employees to success.

Therapy is a better investment IMO - at least they're professionally trained and licensed, and they can help you work on yourself and your goals. The worst people I went to high school with were the types who became life coaches, it's a lot of people who don't want to work a real/traditional job and coaching seemed easier.

I would agree with you for the vast majority of life coaches, but there are some elite ones that work with elite athletes and rich ppl that are probably worth the money

Yeah the elite life coaches are good and also expensive sometimes, but worth it.

Therapy and life coaching are not the same. This is like you saying an apple is better than an orange. It’s not the same.

Also, I think psychiatrists are the best therapists, capable of handling any situation.

Agree with this - I tried out a few therapists but it seemed like they were mostly there to fix acute issues, rather than elevate people in scenarios where there isn't necessarily something needing to be fixed. Probably some therapists out there that offer a blend of therapy/life coaching, but at that point why not just seek out a dedicated life coach - keeping in mind that a good chunk of them probably don't add any value.

The psychiatrist point is interesting. It makes sense that the median psychiatrist is probably a better therapist than the median person out of the larger pool, but I would choose someone with less impressive formal credentials over a psychiatrist in a heartbeat if I thought they could understand/relate to me better.

When I got promoted a couple of years back my firm sponsored me to go through an executive/business coaching certification program to be able to serve the founders/management teams we work with better. Overall, I think the certification process made me an overall better person, there was a lot of reflection exercises/role playing involved in a safe environment that made me open up and face myself on several issues.

As part of the certification I was supposed to complete a certain number of hours of free coaching, still have around 20 hours to complete so happy to help if you'd like with a couple of sessions over zoom or so.

I will caveat one thing as earthwalker7 mentioned above - within my cohort there were alot of hipster types that never really worked a day and a couple of yoga mommys as well who were bored. So you have to trust that's navigating you through the process. DM me if you want to set it up.

Can you elaborate on what issues you faced yourself on, and how the role playing helped?

Also, happy to help you whittle down your hour requirements if you're free to connect :)

Just had my trade dispute rejected by Schwab for a loss of 35k. This single issue alone should be a gigantic red flag to anyone who trades on their platform. If they have a system error, and you do not video record your trading (they actually said this), they will not honour their fuck up. Switching everything away from them. Fuck this company.

It was an intense 6 months experience with a committed cohort of people, there were a lot of constellation buildings / expressing difficult situations and mapping them out / role playing your antagonists etc. I have to say it was extremely helpful then and still is now when I am trying to making difficult decisions as it helps me with trying to understand how people could respond and how I can counter, etc.

Happy to take you up on that offer but with my schedule I can only do one person at a time. Can you DM me and stay in touch over the coming period?

I guess it really depends on how good they are as others above have mentioned. I have a friend that went to an unlicensed "therapist/life coach" who was actually a Scientologist in disguise and tried to get him to join. That was wild.
