Limiting social media usage?

Do you actively limit how often you check your social media or pick your phone?

I've noticed that I can focus much better when I don't fuck around on social media too often and generally feel much more content.

What are your strategies?

Just delete or turn-off notifications while working/studying. After finishing your duties, give yourself a 5 min break to look at your social media pages. Be cautious to not make these 5 mins to last an hour. Set a timer.

Notifications always off on social media, stick a time limit for how much you want to use it per day. Start with just monitoring your screen time and figuring out where you want to spend less time.

I use social media for two reasons:

1. Business (Facebook and Reddit)

2. To have a little fun on WSO

I guess the only social part of social media for me is on WSO.  I don't generally care about:  birthdays, or check ins or parents boasting about kids, or photos.  Some people have thousands of friends on FB.  They probably barely know most of these people but yet they want to tell them all about their personal lives.

Seconded. FB and IG are data mining you the same as Tik Tok. Twitter I keep for work related stuff but that's it. Social media is cancer.

This thread has a general negative sentiment towards social media. Maybe if you just have no life and no friends it just isn't for you. I definitely keep up with people across platforms. Strava, Insta, FB, Slowtwitch, TikTok, and Zwift.

Also, I need a lot of stimuli in my life. I probably use FB the least as its all family pictures and baby pictures in my feed. Insta is more cool and TikTok is very entertaining. My Zwift chat broke or something and I don't know how to fix it, so only can Thumbs up People's rides on there and stuff.

Yeah I essentially follow all the pro triathlon athletes on Instagram and comment sometimes on their races and training and it is pretty cool.

Tiktok has somehow captured my interests in its algorithm including fitness, hot chicks, poker, funny animal videos, fast cars and adrenaline sports.

Conversely, my attitude towards social media is negative because I have a social life and because I'm interested in maintaining it. Social media is a toxic wasteland of mostly political garbage promulgated by people with whom I barely talk--at least in my social circle. But if your friends spend all their free time posting their lives on Facebook/Twitter then I guess social media would be important

I follow athletes among others on Insta - not sure what you’re talking about?

Also dude - who posts on FB / Twitter - I don’t even have Twitter ...

My Insta posts look like this - do you even workout?

I get it, problem is I go on to the explore page and (on insta, fb I deleted like 6 years ago) before I know it, I just wasted 15 mins staring at chick's asses.

I'm from Europe

I deleted all social media apps off my phone a few years ago. I only have messaging apps like WhatsApp. Check WSO fairly regularly and watch some YouTube but that's about the only 'social media' I use. Don't use Instagram, tiktok, Snapchat, whatever else has come and gone (obv I have a LinkedIn but I only maintain my profile). All these new social media channels are super short form and superficial. It's dopamine mining entertainment. I like YouTube because you can watch 25-30m videos on specific topics.

Mid 20s btw

I tried curating my feed, didn't work. inevitably, even my apolitical friends would like or comment something political that would enter my feed, or for instagram if I shut out everyone who was overly narcissistic, my feed would be virtually empty. tried that and ended up with a bunch of the same shit/same type of shit and it got to a saturation point (like surfing feeds, I don't need to see the same frontside turn over and over and over again, if it's really good, it'll pop up on surfline)

I tried turning off notifications, ended up checking it more

tried deleting mobile apps, just wasted more time at work

I think I'm weak minded with regard to social media, and maybe someday I'll be curious to test this hypothesis and what the root causes are, but I found out what worked for me was probation. I'd deactivate a social media account, and set a reminder to check again in 6mos to see if I missed it. if I didn't miss it, I'd delete my account entirely

I ended up deleting 100% of my social media over the past 24mos, unless you count WSO, I've not missed anything of substance. correction: LNKD is still in the probation phase, I haven't fully deleted yet

FWIW, I have great relationships with my friends and family and nurture those in old fashioned ways like calls and visits, and in newer ways like group chats and what not
