MENA Flashpoint

http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/story/2012-01-…

Not too much to say about this. Long story short, if this happens, energy prices will be all over the map. Some thoughts of mine, feel free to add you own:

  • 95% chance of war if they do
  • 99% chance of STRONG international support
  • This could well be Obama's Iranian undoing (alla Carter)
  • This could also be Obama's selling point if he gets tough
  • Wargames indicate that Iran could take out as many as 16 full size American warships
  • Wagames also indicate that we will win within one day
  • I'm not a fan of Iran AT ALL, but I hope they're smart enough to not do this

Iran won't take out 16 warships. I would be shocked if they touched any of them.

That is more then likely a full on war simulation.

On a completely different note I am going to crush a chinese buffet today.

I'm sure it is. My position remains unchanged.

I've read the articles, Iran has small speedboats equipped with rockets that can swarm and overwhelm a larger ship. Our navy is designed to respond to other large fleets, not unconventional small craft warfare. They could definitely do some damage. And even if they just MINED the strait we'd have to halt oil shipments to clear a path which could strangle supplies. It's a nightmare scenario

Look up the youtube video of the somali pirates that thought their cool little 'boat with rocket launchers' would affect a naval vessel, tell me how that worked out for them.

Slight difference, most these are old soviet weapons systems and they've got a lot of them: http://images.china.cn/attachement/jpg/site1007/20111231/000cf1bdd03f10… http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-10qXlmtzKgc/TiZvn6cRE9I/AAAAAAAAAHY/fisrgfBzU… The area is also very heavily mined. We can clear them, but it takes time. In the very short run (a few hours to weeks) they can close it down....that's the problem. I'm trying to find the article detailing the end to end stuff, so, my bad for not putting that in the original post.

Personally, I think that the Iranian government is just posturing for the benefit of keeping its own people in line, but there's a lot of militants in that area that may take things literally / get a bad communication and take matters into their own hands (bad thing). Same type of potential as that of the Berlin Wall...miscommunication on the part of the Soviet gov't led to its fall (good thing). Just curious what you guys think would happen if they close down the strait, and how likely it is....

shorttheworldWhat about helicopter gunships laying waste to these rocket boats? Or are they heat seeking not dumb fire
Both.

The boats would do some damage, probably no where near the worst case projections, and would be wiped off the playing field by the end of the first day of a conflict. LOL, what I'm getting at is what if Iran is stupid enough to do this, what do you think the short - mid term fallout would be. No one had any doubt about the US's ability to mop up the floor with Iraq in '93, but they still crossed the border into Kuwait.
