Moving out of the city for good?
Anyone considering moving out of the city for good after all this nonsense? My firm just sent out a company wide email that we'll be WFH at least through August, and my team specifically has the option to WFH indefinitely afterwards, only coming to meet in the office physically once a month
Part of me just wants to get away from the city completely and move to a rural area, get some land, and go from there. Anyone else feel this way? Idk if this is just irrational because things are obviously crazy right now but I really don't see things returning to normal or anything better anytime soon
100%. Slowly working toward that. If we all can't go to bars and restaurants for god knows how long, there is literally no reason to continue to pay outrageous city rent.
I am a country boy who grew up in rural communities. Due to covid19 I already moved out of the city and I am on a farm right now. Internet is a bit slow, but it works good enough.
Don't think I'll be back in any city environment in the future.
in a similar boat, grew up in missouri and moved to Chicago for work. I always thought the "big city life" was 100% better than living in a rural area back home but starting to really rethink my priorities because of this
Some things are in fact better in a city environment:
When you like an environment where people actually trust each other (because they know each other, unlike in a city), then country it is. I don't like the fake friendliness in larger cities, where everybody just rushes from one place to the next and don't really care about each other.

Yeah it only took 2 weeks of quarantine for me to get back to my family's house in the country. Well worth it at least for the duration of the lockdown - it is great to have room to roam
I would be a lot more open to moving out to the suburbs
I was getting ready to move to the city full time in the fall for school/work. Now i’m not sure if it is worth the financial burden. Most of my reasoning to move was to network and experience the city life. You think I should look into different areas now?
So if you are a first year stay close to office. While WFH might exist now, it could change early next year or if we have a vaccine, so I don’t recommend living far away. I would avoid any building with amenities. I have a building that has a rooftop, pool, gym, study lounge etc. and looks like that will be closed for the rest of the year and I’m not getting any relief for the inability to use them. So just a waste of money.
I’m in the same boat...pool, grill, gym, outdoor patio all locked down. I think that should be the residents call to use these amenities during it, but I understand the management company’s perspective that someone might get sick and sue them for negligence ¯_(ツ)_/¯

No, I enjoy urban living. I view this pandemic as a short term disruption to urban life, I would not make long term life decisions based on a short term disruption.

We are NYC based and both anticipate an uptick in WFH. The fiancee already had the ability do so as long as she didnt abuse it. That definition should change substantially IMO.
I had the ability to as a last resort prior to COVID. I think we will have the ability to do so a little more often.
But honestly, this was starting to creep up already, the thought of being locked up with kids in the future is a massive accelerant to that thought process.
Just hoping RE trades off a bit. We are lucky to have some dry powder we are looking to put to work in this insane rate environment.

Well, my cleaning lady moved FROM Jersey City (which, for those of you who don’t know, is literally 10 to 15 minutes from Manhattan) INTO Manhattan last month, because she just can’t stand the boredom in Jersey City, especially in a lockdown environment. She said that even during a lockdown, New York is WAY better than Jersey City. She is now living on the Upper West Side

Anybody think about doing transient WFH. Like a couple months at the beach, couple months country living, etc. Just to keep the mind fresh. Obviously difficult because not a lot of places signing one/two month leases.
Our MD told us he doesn't care where we are based as long as we have the ability to dial in in the right time zone. The team suspects some people are in Australia, and 1 in the Caribbean. We can't prove it though.
I've been seriously looking into it. I'd recommend checking out long-stay AirBnB rentals. You can book them for a month and many run a pretty good "long-term booking rate." There are a lot of cities I'd love to spend a month or two living in and so as long as work can be remotely, this seems like it could be a fun thing to try out.
How is everyone's cell phone reception out in the boonies? Mine sucks, which would be one point in favor of urban/suburban living.
I have zero interest in living in the suburbs or the middle of nowhere.
