NYC MBA Associate Rent With GF
Hi everyone, looking for some advice on NYC rent budgeting.
Pay: post-MBA IB Associate, so $175K base. GF makes ~$65K. Plan to split rent proportionally so ~75%-25%.
Debt: I will have full ~$275K of loans and ~$50K of savings post-graduation.
Preferences: Pretty lowkey but would like a washer/dryer and dishwasher. Ideally a 2BR or nicer 1BR
Neighborhoods: Brooklyn Heights, Williamsburg, UES, Greenpoint
We are moving in together, so I'm wondering how much we should target for rent? Have any of you been in a similar situation, and do you have any recommendations?

Probably target $4K-$6K for rent per the 40x rule.
With all the loans, I'd stick to something closer to 4-4.5k. But I'm also conservative and typically budget based on no bonus (and the bonus is just extra saving/investment).

This is great advice. We are in a similar range, GF makes a bit less. But I have a lot less in loans post-grad. We do about 4.6K, but not in NYC. Split it, she pays for food and general needs, think cleaning supplies and whatnot. I pay the majority of bills as well.

Yeah ik MBA is Fukin expensive. Imagine if this guy didn’t get the job he did. Plenty of folks making shit money and in debt.
Sad reality especially with how the '23 and '24 job market is like.
Hudson yards is renting some new buildings in the 3s rn if your willing to risk new buildings.
Which buildings?
Personally would do $3200-4000 in rent and make two or three extra payments per year on your loans. Will expand your purchasing power later on when you can stop making payments. And better to get ahead of the interest.

Not a ton of options under $4k, but with $275k in debt I think sub $4k is the answer. You should prob just go with a larger 1BR or small 2BR/1Ba
