Office in Chelsea: Where to Live?
Moving to NYC in a few months, really struggling to figure out where to live since my office is in West Chelsea close to Chelsea Market. Only friends I know moving to Manhattan are doing finance or working on the East side. In either case, to save money they're doing Queens/Brooklyn or living in Financial District. This isn't an option because I can't stand a commute above 30 mins.
Where do people to save money when working on the West side? NJ? I've heard you get called out for tax avoidance if you do that. Do people cross commute (East to West)? Seems tough, but I'd be down if it saves me enough money.
Edit: Base is $115k, so was thinking of spending 3-3.5k a month. Would appreciate feedback on this.
I think you have a great start, with listing Hoboken/Jersey City. Both are inexpensive"relatively" places to live and not such a terrible commute. Just make sure you factor in the cost of the PATH train and if you have to take the subway on top of that, it can add up. A buddy of mine lives in hoboken with a wife and two kids and always says the "talent" there is ridiculous, so there is that.
Whatever you do don't rely on taking a crosstown bus i.e. M23 to get from the east side to the west side. I cite the M23 because it is indeed the slowest bus and form of transportation in NYC(proven). But I would like around LES/East Village and take the L train to the west side. It has a great nightlife, food, housing filled with young people, and it has a great nightlife.
So East side is fine as long as its train not bus?
The L will be shut down in 2 years, just a heads up. That's a while from now, but just something to be aware of.
I was positively surprised by how nice Hoboken/Jersey City are. Personal favorite remains the UWS, but that's going to cost an arm. Bottom of East Village and LES could work if you're close to an F/M station; I would probably go for that.
Come on, nobody without a family is really going to live on the UWS.
Harlem, commute should be easily under a half hour if you live near the A. Queens is also doable if you're by the E. Hoboken/Jersey city would probably be longer than either of these as the path train runs up 6th avenue which is still a bit of a shlep from that part of Chelsea.
Is Hoboken really much better cost-wise? I looked up some rentals on Zillow and they didn't seem much cheaper than Murray Hill or LES.
Not really, especially if you want to be near the path train.
