Price of eggs?

this story has been all over the news recently, as a crisis.  Do people not know how commodity pricing works?

Somebody please stop me before I start going long pork bellies, or shorting FCOJ futures.  I need enough left in my bank account to buy my kid the GI Joe with the kung-fu grip.

Egg prices have indeed been a hot topic, and for good reason. Based on the most helpful WSO content, egg prices have seen significant increases, with reports mentioning a carton of eggs costing as much as $9.50 in some Western countries. This surge is tied to broader inflationary pressures, supply chain disruptions, and other economic factors.

If you're considering diving into commodities like pork bellies or FCOJ futures, remember that commodity markets are driven by supply and demand dynamics, as highlighted in WSO threads. Prices can be volatile, and external factors like weather, geopolitical events, or even policy changes can shake things up. Always tread carefully and ensure you have a solid strategy before making any moves!

Most people don’t know how commodity pricing works, that is a very fair assessment. Hell, most people think options and futures are some evil Wall Street idea from the 90’s (obviously not on here). A bunch of chickens die and egg prices go up, imagine that. Also, how is poultry supply doing after COVID? Plenty of chickens were culled due to restaurant demand falling flat. Has that impact recovered yet?

A key reason that egg prices are in the news is due to the fact that the media does lean left and inflation was a key point for Trump winning. They’re counting on the public’s lack of economic understanding being a driver in how they view Trump.

Also, egg prices are currently beyond fucked. This impacts me more than most as eggs are a staple in my diet and an amazing byproduct of the flavorless meat that is chicken. They helped to ensure that protein is feeding my muscles and while keeping cholesterol supply high to ensure higher than normal test levels. This was really important during the glory days of Covid when a man could reasonably power lift, work on his pistol draw and solo room clearing tactics between trading, research and administrative tasks.

The question is how do we fix this in a manner that is moral and ethical. The answer is simple:

Snowmobile into Canada, steal their chickens and profit.

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.

if you work in finance and higher egg prices are impacting your day-to-day lifestyle something is wrong lol

Bro he said he eats over 1000 eggs per day for bodybuilding.

Oh, come on.  Mr Trump won the entire election on the back of inflation, on the explicit promise he would lower the price of goods.

The "public's lack of economic understanding being a driver" in how they view Mr Trump has already had it's impact.  It does not matter what causes commodity prices to rise or fall - Mr Trump promised to lower prices, and it's not "left leaning" to hold him accountable for that promise.  If you want to lie on the campaign trail, all well and good, but you don't get to then plead impotence in the face of market forces.

Every American should be holding Mr Trump responsible for high egg prices, liberal and conservative

It is also hilarious that you insult the "public's" lack of understanding, and then display this kind of shocking ignorance in the same breath.  Who cares if restaurant demand for chicken was flat?  Broilers and hens are so separate from a supply chain perspective they may as well be different animals.

It boils down to: 2024 Biden USDA culls 20m+ egg-laying chickens due to bird flu fear > egg prices go up due to production shortfalls > Liberal media argues it is somehow Trumps fault after being in office for less than a month for not bending the physics of the universe to create more of a commodity from thin air.

I get all my eggs and similar products locally from farmers markets. Haven't noticed a change at all.

It's the same thing when you're using eggs as an example of how he's supposedly not delivering on that promise - MSNBC, Newsweek,  Democrat politician's House.gov, etc. Reducing government waste is THE #1 way a President can take direct steps to address inflation. That's literally the entire point of DOGE... which has obviously been his top and most publicized priority since entering office.

Presidents love to take credit when the economy is going great and love to blame the prior president when it’s going poorly - It doesn’t matter the party. And don’t get me started on how short-sighted the public is when it comes to fiscal policy.

Mr Trump promised to lower prices.  He won the election on the back of anger about inflation.  Prices are not lower.  It is neither liberal nor conservative to hold a politician accountable to their campaign promises.  Mr Trump has either lied, or failed.  Either way, it is hardly to partisan to point it out.

In all fairness to President Trump, he can do very little to lower prices.  His cultish followers think he can waive a magic wand and make inflation go away. He can influence congress to reduce spending which would have a marginal but positive impact.  With that said, his tariffs would not only wipe out any benefit of a spending reduction they iwould make prices go substantially higher.

Biden’s fear was that bird flu would jump to humans and we’d have another pandemic. US does not require egg industry to protect its birds from infection. Mexico does. Its egg layers have been vaxxed or whatever they do to keep infections at bay. Which is why Mexico has offered to step up and supply eggs to US.

One reason US birds are not vaxxed is if they die from disease, federal government will reimburse industry the cost of buying new chickens. So no vaxxing of our birds because it’s just adding costs.

Not only does the American public subsidize egg producers and their cost cutting, our policies also increase the risk of another pandemic. God bless America.

I think that rising prices of eggs might be the least of our problems at the moment.  Today and we got tariffs and, surprise, we got retaliatory tariffs.  Treasury Secretary Bessent says Wall Street will be fine and they are focusing on main street.  Tariffs are not going to help  main street.

It seems like Trump is determined to wreck the economy and ruin our relationships around the world.  This might be one heck of a economics/history lesson one day

Our egg 🥚 poker game has gone completely viral, thanks for everyone for sharing. It's been a fun week. Shout out to @allincasinohq and @dkcasino for the shares!

Biden as President: I just want to be able to afford eggs!! Biden's America is suffocating me due to inflation! Trump 2024!

Trump as President: You see, egg prices are a function of a complex interplay of global supply chains that no one, and certainly not Dear Leader, has any control over! Please give him a chance!! Short term pain long, term gain!!

Don't make me try to corner the FCOJ market.    You'll end up making nice to a giant gorilla.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

If he implements tariffs, there could be substantial short term pain.  The chain reaction:

Tariffs implemented

Companies raise prices

Inflation indexes rise

Fed raises rates (this is the main problem for investors)

His voters can't see past how immigrants are bad and that trans people should not be female sports
