What’s your typical total all-in comp as an analyst? Also,  which groups tend to have the highest and lowest bonuses?

It looks like you're referencing a Q&A hosted by an IB Analyst at a Big Five bank in Toronto. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key takeaways and advice that might align with your interests:

  1. Summer Recruiting (US or Toronto):

    • For Canadian students targeting US or Toronto roles, it's crucial to start early. Many US banks have accelerated timelines, especially for diversity leadership programs.
    • Networking is key. Reach out to alumni from target schools like Queen's or Ivey who are in the industry. Building relationships can help you secure referrals or insights into the process.
    • Prepare for technical and behavioral interviews. Focus on mastering financial modeling, valuation techniques, and common IB technical questions.
  2. Diversity Leadership Programs:

    • Programs like J.P. Morgan's CIB Launching Leaders, Goldman Sachs Insights Day, and Morgan Stanley Early Insights are excellent for gaining exposure and securing interviews for summer analyst roles.
    • Many of these programs are open to underrepresented minorities (URM), women, LGBTQ+, and other diverse groups. Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria and apply early.
    • Use these programs as a networking opportunity. Follow up with professionals you meet and maintain those connections.
  3. Advice for Sophomore Recruiting:

    • Apply to both diversity programs and general summer analyst applications where applicable. For example, you can apply to Goldman Sachs Insights Day and their general internship application simultaneously.
    • Focus on building a strong resume with relevant experiences, such as finance clubs, case competitions, or internships.
  4. Deal Reps and Analyst Work:

    • As an analyst, gaining deal reps is critical for career progression. Focus on taking ownership of tasks like financial modeling, pitchbook creation, and client engagement.
    • Seek feedback from senior team members to improve your work and demonstrate your commitment to learning.

If you have specific questions about any of these topics or need tailored advice, feel free to ask!

A couple of questions on ib recruiting:
- How did you convert your coffee chats into referrals? I’m coming from a target school but I’m not in a club. I’ve done some coffee chats, but I’m not sure if they’ll actually materialize into an R1. How do I maximize my chances of getting an R1? Should I stop taking coffee chats until I can talk to someone who is directly involved in recruiting?
- How did you prepare beyond the 400IB, Red Book, and using AI? I’m worried that since I’ve never done a real IB interview, I haven’t prepared for the types of questions that actually come up in interviews and have only studied the guides that everyone else has read.

Great qs that lots of students have 1) In terms of coffee chats, I wouldn't just focus on the recruiting captain - doesn't come off well received, want to be able to show you have chatted 2-3 others in the group you are interested in. I think one thing to keep in mind is lots of students think of chats as a one-way street, but being able to be personable and have a genuine conversation goes a long way and those are the conversations that will push for you. Another piece of advice is to see if any strong chats are open to connecting you with others on their team at the end (usually they say yes or will connect you with someone looped into recruiting). Last, keeping your contacts updated and catching up once in a while really goes a long way, because many students will not do that and you're way more likely to get into process

2) once you go through the Breaking into Wall Street Guides, you should start mocking with peers and then upper years, especially given you go to a target school there should be a ton. Upper years will bring up questions that are not traditional in the guides (qs they've gotten in past processes) and it'll stimulate a real life interview. There are a ton of websites as well like IBVine where you can practice flash cards for concepts and also have more unique questions to practice. Even while practicing yourself, I'd make a habit of speaking your thought process out loud. In addition, I'd watch some YouTube videos for mental math tricks because being able to handle equations fast and clean comes off strong and sets candidates apart
