If you're a twink no, you don't. If you want to actually be taken seriously as someone who works out and cares about body aesthetic yes, you do.

I would just hit legs once per week and change up the workouts if you're getting bored. Plus gives your upper body more time to rest between training sessions

From an aesthetic perspective you may be able to get away with it if you're not huge up top, but regardless I think a leg session every other week would be the minimum I would consider if I am in the gym regularly. 

My leg workouts are much more tiring than my upper body ones, I believe that is because there are more compound lifts. The extra work here is good for your metabolism, which will help with ripped look you are going for. Some of your largest muscles are in the legs and not only is it good to be balanced but it's also good for overall growth 

 

Yeah bud, let me tell you a story about someone (myself obviously). I didn't train legs often and did a ton of hiking last year - ended up fucking my right knee up after putting 70 miles on it in Glacier National. Went to PT and found out it's because I have weak hamstrings and hip muscles which puts more strain on my knees.

As you get older you want to ensure you have mobility and there are certain leg exercises you absolutely should be doing. It ain't all about aesthetics. I'm in my very early 30s and it was a good wake up call...

 

Yeah, this is right. Working out your lower body is critical to avoiding injury as you get older. Unless you plan to be a totally useless person, activities like running, hiking, skiing, biking, etc will absolutely require you to actively work out your legs. If you don't you will injure yourself.

The human knee is stupid. You need to build the muscles around it when you're young or you're going to tear your meniscus doing some mundane bullshit in your 40s.

Yeah my sister tore her meniscus in her 50s. She was a runner and kept in shape but unfortunately it is a common injury. She is an airline pilot so couldn’t fly for a couple of months.

X2 on the runner part

A lot of running advice saying up your mileage or volume is dog shit. If you want to be really good you need to cross train and get leg muscle.

also leg workouts carry over in literally every sport 

 

Pretty sure there’s something related to cardiovascular health whereby working your legs also enhances the muscularity of your upper body. Watched a video on it a while back so don’t remember the details. Could just be the testosterone thing that this comment refers to.

 

FYI, red blood cells are produced in the red bone marrow in your femur. So as well as boosting testosterone, destroying on leg day also boosts red blood cell production

A big set of wheels is aesthetic af dude. Automatic respect from me knowing the pain and consistency it takes to get a nice legs. In my opinion when I see guys with a decently built upper body and skinny ass legs it just looks weird.

Also, when you think about athletic movement pattern, the legs are always involved. That’s where a lot of power is generated. Leg workouts to me are the most fun because it’s always challenging and you can legitimately see what your physical limits are.

 

Doesn't matter. Your upper body won't see any progress either 100% so don't bother.

OP please listen. Ever since Spring 21’ I’ve gotten into working out and running. I only do upper body workouts and run between 12-36 miles per week. I advise that you do one day of push-ups, one day of biceps with dumbbells, one day of shoulders with dumbbells, and one day of triceps, respectively during the week(s) spread out so you can spread out your training. Also, if you want to maximize muscle protein synthesis, you need to eat (at least get 30g of protein) 3-5 times per day. I’ve been doing intermittent fasting, so I typically only eat twice and maybe three times on a couple days out of the week. Also, I’m not fat or average, I’m skinny (6’0”, 150) but my muscles have good definition. I’m 23 and my goal is to be 165-170 by the time I’m 30 then try to retain or let it go a little. Side note, I love running more ;) which a lot of lifters despise. If you want diet tips, please PM.

Never done a 5k, and I’ve never done a marathon either. The longest I ever ran was a half-marathon which I competed in 2h 5m. It wasn’t official but I timed myself. I just run for my enjoyment. It’s nice where I run (trail that follows a river for miles on end with trees and a hillside on one side.)Trail in PA

 

Even if you want to train for pure aesthetics (which I think is vain and against the classical ideal of why a man would have a desire to be physically strong), you need to factor in proportions. You’re going to look like a doofus with fat biceps/chest and pencil legs. To me, you’ll look like a coward because it signals someone that lacks the courage to go through the most grueling workouts (legs), someone who only wants the short term gratification of an arm pump. Put it this way - which is more daunting and physically demanding: 2 hours of heavy bench press, or 2 hours of heavy squats?

anyways yeah, I would hit legs. Strong hamstrings and core are essentials to athleticism and injury prevention. 

 

I love how people want to look strong without being strong. Here is the thing, if you are strong, you will look strong. Get those gains all over your body and cut your body fat and you will look good. Don't ignore your legs. You won't be able to carry your girl if she tries to jump on you, but your chest will look good in pictures.

 

Stronger legs from training from squats and deadlifts is going to mean a better physique and more bulk. The myth is that those exercises only train legs. Also can’t get the CNS rush after anything other than a heavy deadlift or squat
