Should Discomfort When Throwing a Baseball
I could ask this on Facebook but no one over there has probably thrown a baseball in 20-30 years. I have had this issue for a while but it only bothers me when I throw a baseball. I was throwing a baseball a couple of days ago with some discomfort. I am not looking to be able to throw a ball 90 mph. I would like to be able to throw without any discomfort. I know that I could see a physician or a physical therapist but I am not looking to spend a lot of money here.
I am not not interested in having TJ surgery. Has anyone here ever dealt with this issue?
I would wake up in the mornings most days when I played and could not lift a 5 pound weight with my throwing arm. My coach would put horse joint numbing cream (which is way stronger) and about 5 minutes after I was good to go. Amazing shit
Does your elbow even exist anymore?
The muscle tears have pretty much healed. Now it just has a little bit less strength than my non-dominant arm.
I agree TJ surgery would be a bad move, considering that would be for you elbow.
hahaha. What is typical with shoulders? I am thinking some kind of inflammation
Is the rotator cuff in the shoulder? could be that
Watch all the Athlean-X videos on shoulder pain and see if he hits on where you feel the pain. My shoulder starting hurting when I was benching and watching his benching for shoulder pain video led me to switch to dumbbells and change my form slightly and it went away over time.
I’d definitely suggest seeing a physical therapist. You can’t self diagnose on the internet.
Also look up Dr Andrew Lock, he has some great shoulder “prehab” stuff I guess you would call it. I do his “shoulder big 3” before benching, it helped with some shoulder impingement I was having. It may help.
I thought this was a philosophical question.
What? Philosophical?
Yes - “Should discomfort” or “Should not discomfort”
It’s really a good debate.
Idk about throwing, I only played soccer and wrestled. I'd probably have an Obama opening pitch looking throw if I tried to throw a baseball, but I do weightlift pretty seriously, and dead hangs help me a ton with stiff/tweaked shoulders. Although not totally sure if those would help with this.
I know what you mean by the Obama throw. It is a little disappointing for me because I use to throw hard and far. I had a really strong arm from centerfield. I feel like if I tried that kind of throw now, my arm would fall off
Not strong enough for the Mets tho
yes, had on and off issues from a lifetime of baseball until I got into my late 20s, impossible to say where your issue is but what helped me is a combination of supplemental exercises for rotator cuff and smaller shoulder muscles (the teres muscles as an example), as well as proper technique (look up eric cressey for more on this), and proper warm up when throwing, start off with short toss for much longer than you want to, and then slowly slowly slowly progress from there, I also cut back on barbell bench press and focused more on dumbbells plus overhead work and that helped as well
if I were you though, I'd befriend an athletic trainer, get them to look at your form and tell them where your pain is, because I'm kinda just throwing out ideas without any context on where your pain is
They are a bit cheesy - but search 'Bob and Brad Physical Therapists' on YouTube - They have been really helpful for me in finding exercises and/or getting a better handle on some things that might help for a variety of things.
That intro makes me want to fucking kill someone
This should cover everything you are looking for. I used a 3-5 pound weight for these when I played and that is what every trainer I worked with recommended.

My pitching career ended in college with a shoulder injury, so I have some experience of what you're talking about. that said, you didn't give nearly enough details. Is it a sharp pain? Is it inside the shoulder or on the periphery? Can you tell if it's a tightness/tendon pain? When did you first feel it?
Given you said you just started feeling it and don't throw 90 I'm going to guess it's just tendinitis, and should go away quickly. That said, I'm not a doctor a physical therapist or any other person qualified to make that determination. So take it for what you should take any other random advice you read on the internet: zero.
Well, If I move my arm very quickly it would hurt pretty bad. The pain is kind of in the upper triceps close to the shoulder. I try to compensate by not throwing hard and using the Obama method. This is not a new thing. I have had it for several years but it has been getting worse. Tendinitis sounds about right. Pushups also hurt the area
I'm very glad I've coined a new term lmao
A few years old injury sounds more serious than Tendinitis which usually goes away after a few weeks-months. I would recommend seeing a physical therapist.
