You put it down, you better be ready to deliver if it comes down to it. Otherwise they'll know you were lying and sacrifice you to an effigy of Freddie Mercury.

On a serious note though it's pretty depressing that this is what people are coming to. It's pathetic for someone to need to flat out lie to get a job, and disturbing that characteristics like sexuality and race play a bigger part in hiring (in some situations) than actual qualifications do. 

 

I have personally witnessed people lie about their social class, financial background, sexual orientation and, in rare cases, even about their race.
Companies have no way of finding out about it, neither can they ask for evidence. I don't think they even care - like, what are they going to do, ask everyone to bring a printout from 23andMe? Ask for their dating profile?

The best course of action would be to be honest about it and give people who rightly deserve to be in a certain group a chance.

 

I would say the risk is not worth it. Banks aren't going to literally verify your sexuality, but some LGBT diversity programs do match you with an assigned LGBT mentor who basically acts as your buddy for the first 1-2 years of your analyst program. It would be very easy for this mentor to figure out that you lied about your sexual orientation then it only takes a (rightfully) angry senior mentor to sink your career. 

Risk / reward isn't worth it, imo. You're already at a target, don't risk it. 

 

You probably could get away with it by saying that you're bisexual and coincidentally just happen to be dating only girls during your entire mentorship. I'm not sure you even have to put out with men to be considered bisexual, just say you "find some men hot" and voilà.

Girls can kiss another girl just the one time and then claim to be bisexual the entire rest of their lives.

 

I'm glad the immigrants who built the railroads and all that other hardworking blue collar stuff weren't like this generation. Buncha whiney cucks always complaining about every little thing. Just shut up and work hard and you'll get ahead where ever you go. All this stupid stuff about mah school and mah bank application is for losers.

 

I can't imagine having to fake being gay or bi; you would have to walk on ice to keep up a fake sexuality. Regardless of the ethics of lying, having to pretend to be LGBT for who knows how long sounds difficult and will probably make your work life awful.

What's to lie about? LGBTQIA+ covers literally everything. The definitions are so broad that it encompasses nearly all sexualities. Has a wang ever entered your wet dream? You're pan sexual or bi or queer. Like pink clothes? You're non-binary. Going through a sexual dry period? You're asexual. And so on.

Then you should approach recruiting under the banner of LGBTQIA+. The community made up their own demented, deranged definitions. They made their bed; now they must lie in. If some depraved narcissist like Demi Lovato can claim the banner then so can anyone.

I’m bi and got my job from LGBTQ recruiting and did O4U and I legit feel kind of uncomfortable around some people because I’m not gay enough. I’m a straight presenting, DL bi guy with a masculine voice and I don’t watch drag shows or go to prides parades or anything. Even though I know the LGBTQ+ is supposed be a wide umbrella, I would feel better about it if I were like an effiminate bottom or a stereotypical annoyingly gay person instead of a straightish guy who watches football and who also likes to fuck dudes. Would I get ghosted or have my career ruined if I married a woman? I really only started to come out to people for all this recruiting stuff anyways because I thought it would give me a competitive advantage but I also kind of wish I had not done it and kept my private life private, there’s more downsides to being out as bi than gay (where you really have to imo). I don’t know, I honestly don’t feel entirely comfortable around the gays or the straights, bi erasure is a big thing. I think it’s the best and worst of both worlds. Please don’t fake being gay to get ahead though, that’s wrong and problematic and could have negative consequences down the line. Being LGBTQ is very nuanced and sometimes challenging, please don’t exploit our community to get ahead. 

 

Your community isn't oppressed and has no business being part of "diversity" recruiting. Gay people, for example, are better educated and higher earners than straight people. Why should an already economically privileged group get another leg up?

It’s a challenging experience a lot of the time and it’s more challenging if you’re non white, trans etc. I personally don’t think that we should have diversity recruiting and slots set aside for women or LGBTQ+ people (but definitely should for people who are black/Hispanic/low income), and to have things at the point where people want to fake being gay (although I really do not think those people have thought it through or understand and/or are morally bankrupt) is insane. And yes gay men do earn more and are smarter on average ;) 

 

I'm a bi-questioning freshman and I'm kinda worried about this. I want to apply to these LGBT programs and I think I qualify but it makes me so fucking uncomfortable. I'm a virgin and only ever had relationships with girls for social reasons in high school (I am in the closet) and haven't gotten a chance to do anything in college because of covid-online-school. I do have "effeminate" characteristics but I'm worried I'm not LGBT enough and I don't want to be seen weirdly. I feel like people will think me suspect because I'm not gay or lesbian and at the same time, people will think I only identified as LGBT to get through the process. Also, I'm afraid in the future what this will mean for my career. I don't know what IB office culture is like so like, will the whole office know I'm LGBT? Will I be treated differently? What if I marry a woman? I'm just so uncomfortable and confused.

So asking your opinion, If I identify as "bi" or "questioning", do you think I should still apply to these programs. I'm hoping you give me the encouragement here to get over my insecurities and apply. :) I have literally done nothing over the past 48 hours besides think about whether to check the LGBT box on my Sophomore IB application and submit.

 

My 2c is if you want to then you should. ‘Questioning’ definitely falls under the LGBT+ umbrella. The whole thing about not being ‘oppressed’ enough is total BS - yes, if you’re in a F/M relationship at the time then you might not be actively experiencing lots of discrimination on a daily basis, but this doesn’t mean you never will and there are also specific forms of bi-discrimination (which unfortunately can also come from others within the LGBT+ community)

 

You should do it. I’m bi and was in a similar boat, didn’t do sophomore programs because I was too scared, and mildly regret not doing it. Ended up doing O4U (which I highly recommend!), made some great connections and did SA LGBTQ recruiting. Sexual orientation is fluid, if you’re questioning, you’re probably somewhere on the LGBTQ+ spectrum and shouldn’t hesitate to do it.

I guess for trans your guess would work... in reality though I think for most people, maybe not the poster above who said he was bi but very masculine in how he carries himself, but for the average person a social media check would probably give a company a pretty good verification. But again as discussed above if they were ever to tell someone they're not what they identify as (lying or not) it's probably too sticky (phrasing) of an issue to touch from a legal/HR standpoint because of the lawsuit that would happen if they were wrong.

In regards to OP, I say do it and tell us if it works. Think about it, you're already weaving some bullshit story fraught with lies about how "Ever since I was a little boy I've always known I wanted to work for JP Morgan". If you're worried about dealing with the guilt get on grindr like the guy above did, also please post a follow up letting us know. 

 

Yes. Most people commenting here are probably not in tune with how difficult recruiting really is even from a target. These days places like Citi and PWP take mostly diversity hires or people are getting in due to nepotism. Your background is also much more deserving than the typical girl from Greenwich, CT so don't feel bad taking spots from them. People who actually need these programs are consistently robbed of them and tbh you don't even have to lie. Apply to first-gen programs like ModernGuild they will help you out too but don't stress about it too much do what's best for you.

 

If you get the job, you better study up on being LGBTQ.  You also better get knowledgeable about all those musicals.  And make sure you can talk about Will & Grace episodes

 

Diversity recruitment is stupid and you're a loser if you support and/or have to use those programs (shower me with ms idgaf).

OP, feel free do your part to take advantage of a system that takes advantage of society. Granted, I'd be worried about maybe getting an LGBT mentor.

 

I honestly just don’t think gay ppl have it easy even w/ the diversity program. I applied to literally every diversity programs and got rejected from all of them. Landed an eb offer through regular recruiting.
 

Another potential downside to lying is that HR might want you to sit on diversity initiatives. Imagine being straight and have to talk abt the lgbt culture at the firm to gay kids lol

 

Honestly everyone complaining about diversity should just say they're asexual or 1/64th Cherokee and participate. Problem solved, no more complaining

 

What if a bisexual person who is married to a person of the opposite sex puts LGBT on everything?  If the company were to fire him or her for lying, they could end up in deep shit.  Really, there's no way for the company to tell if you practice what you preach in the bedroom
