Ultimate Summer Rides

With June upon us it is once again time for staring out the window and daydreaming about a life outside of the hallowed halls of financial institutions. Taking the day off, jumping into that ride you’ve so elegantly pimped and just cruising with the top down ‘till your heart’s content.

That is why today I am taking a breaking from industry related issues and bringing back an old time favorite. A car thread. This time with the added caveat of them having to be summer specific vehicles. I don’t care how good the air conditioning is in a Maybach, we are talking about fun and sun rides here…

Just to get the creative juices flowing, go ahead and rip these unworthy plebmobiles to shreads.

For my money I am posting my choice as the pic for this post. I don’t know why, but that old school Mercedes 300 SL spells summer car to me. I don’t know if it’s a generational thing as I watched them cruise down the memory lanes of my youth. I don’t know if it is nostalgia for a time when a Benz was not made of more plastic than a porno star. I don’t know if it is that choo choo train chug of the old diesel engines. All I know is that this is my ultimate summer ride. In that color, that year, that body design. What’s yours?

What makes a Honda Civic a summer vehicle exactly? Or a Ford Focus? I'm not really sure what the dude that wrote that article was using as his requirements but they suck.

Gas mileage? Not sure what that has to do with the nice weather. I'd rather have the top-down in a gas guzzler than crawling down the highway in something that gets 40mpgs

My pick is the Porsche 550 for the ultimate summer car.

And Midas, that pic is not THE true Merc 300SL. This is.

[quote=Banker88]Gotta love the R8 Spyder: http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-5-2-fsi-spyder/#2282793

But for the more affordable summer car, can't argue with the mustang convertible: http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2011-ford-mustang-gt-convertible/…

Or the new Camaro convertible: http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-chevrolet-camaro-convertible-first-…]

Well, that looks like a good way to spend the bonus!

Had (still have actually, just not in the city with me) a 1992 Camaro Z28 that was my ride when I was home from college in the summers. It was a super low mileage, T-top car. Never drove it in the rain so I never had to put the roof in it. Was a hell of a lot of fun.

On my 13th bday, my dad came home from the office around noon and called me downstairs to go eat out for lunch. When i arrived downstairs he was waiting for me in this (see link below) with a hot blonde chick in the driver's seat. He had the car (and the blonde) for part of day from the BMW dealership. This car has spelled summer to me ever since.

Haha. I literally thought the same thing, then I scrolled down and you had already said it. But, it is LGBT Pride month, so we should be proud of the monkeys who enjoy Crossfires and Miatas...

I miss the posts like this. Thanks for taking my mind off of excel.

There's nothing wrong with the MX-5, especially since first generation chassis' were under 1,000kg. It's nothing hardcore or special at all but it is a fun little car to thrash around... along the lines of a Lotus Elan pretty much.

I gotta say I'm aesthetically pleased by the Chevy Camaro, wouldn't name it a top 5 summer car, or even top 20, for that matter.

Sidenote: Friend has an SL500 a few years newer than the one in your picture. It's everything I (and you, I'm guessing) have ever dreamed for.
