Using my personal laptop during lunchtime?

I work in banking where we have to come into the office five days a week and sometimes I use my own personal laptop during lunch to do some networking.

There have been several times that my coworkers have seen me using my personal laptop during lunch and I was wondering if this is something that’s acceptable / professional to do in banking / finance or is it more out of the norm / can arouse suspicion?

Thanks!

Based on previous WSO threads, it's generally advisable to avoid using your personal laptop for non-work-related activities in the office, especially in a banking environment. Here are some key points to consider:

  • Perception Matters: In the banking and finance industry, perception is crucial. Using your personal laptop might give the impression that you're not fully engaged with your work or that you're handling personal matters during work hours.
  • Scrutiny: As mentioned in the WSO thread, "I'd really (!!) stay away from using your work computer for any searches not work-related. You're being scrutinized for a couple of weeks - be on your best behavior so to speak."
  • Privacy: If you need to handle personal matters, it's better to do so on your phone or tablet, and ideally in a private setting or during lunch outside the office.

In summary, while it might not be explicitly against the rules, using your personal laptop in the office can arouse suspicion and might not be seen as professional. It's best to handle personal tasks discreetly and outside of the office environment.

Does it have to be your personal laptop? Can’t network from a phone or an iPad?
