What books do you keep on your desk?

Pretty much what the title says, is there any book that you always keep on your desk? I am looking for broad books about IB that are not completely academic so I can reference if I need to. Or even if it's not about finance, it would be nice to hear about the books you like to check multiple times

I believe in this book, because I believe we are at war.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

Real estate (obviously) but I have the following along with a stack of Harvard Business Reviews, Urban Land Magazines, and The Economists:

  • The Death and Life of Great American Cities
  • Walkable City Rules
  • Making it in Real Estate: Starting Out as a Developer
  • Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Rebuild American Prosperity
  • Utopia for Realists: How We Can Build the Ideal World

I have many other real estate books, like my signed copy of Raising The Bar: The Life and Work of Gerald D. Hines, but most are at home.

CRE How did you like Death and Life? I finished it recently and overall really liked the message, especially that it left the room open for private development that wouldn’t be overly stifled by planning/zoning. However, I'm in weird niche where if I brought that into the office I don't think it would be looked up too favorably.

I enjoyed it tremendously. I think she was a visionary and that you can see her ideas, from the 60's, replicated and amplified in the movement back to cities over the last two decades.

What makes you think your office mates wouldn't like it on your desk?

1) How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie 2) 12 Rules For Life by Jordan Peterson

Both of these books have made a great influence on my life. I keep them on my desk whenever I need to remind myself of certain things such as:

"Don't condemn, criticize, or complain" "Stand up straight with your shoulders back"

Funniest

You forgot Jordan Peterson's most important piece of advice: "Don't overdo benzos."

Most Helpful

For fun: -Lake Success: Easy read. about a HF manager who has a midlife crisis -King of Capital: Good bio on Blackstone/Steve Schwarzman -When genius failed -Fooled by Randomness (I know the last two are more trading oriented but I tend to not keep the usual stuff like Liars Poker because everyone “claims” to have read them so they perceive you as basic. Barbarians at the Gate my be a good one though)

For biz: -Bloomberg magazines -Training the Street materials from my training: just to kind of give me guidance if I’m ever stuck on a specific logic

yes, it is more technical but if you want to learn more about derivatives it can be a good way to understand them. I actually had to read it as part of a college course.

Great books, although for fun I keep very different selections on my desk...a lot more books are more fun than the ones stated above...

Persistency is Key

Think and Grow Rich - Napoleon Hill

The original training manual that Jordan Belfort used at Stratton-Oakmont Inc, notably heavy on Napoleon Hill philosophy. not sure where I found the above pdf online but if any monkeys are interested, I can see if I can upload it.

Man's Search for Meaning is a classic book

Listening to the audiobook of Antifragility rn by Nassim Taleb. Really good book. A tip for people like me who don’t like to sit down and read, get audiobooks and listen to them whenever you play video games (assuming the game is somewhat mindless), you will fly through books
