Van Leeuwen has never done me wrong… If you’re looking to splurge a bit, Caffe Panna is very good (get the Cookies n Panna) – they have a store right beside Gramercy Park and also sell in Butterfield Market (which sometimes has special flavors).

Van Leuween is solid - I keep seeing a long line in front of the Morgenstern in SoHo but never understood why that place is popular
They're popular because they have weird ice cream flavors. I remember last summer they had flavors like "Eggplant oil" and "Raw milk", just to name a few. They're surprisingly good though, would recommend if you can deal with the long line
I'm a sucker for new flavors - where ever I go I try something new and end up regretting it haha.
I might visit again if they do have weird stuff like that (I remember interesting mixes, but nothing like the ones you mentioned)
Going to put you onto the best hidden spot in the city. A La Mode Shoppe. It's a kids store, but they have an ice cream counter. By far the best quality and price in the city.
Anita La Mamma del Gelato in the UES is amazing
their Nomad location is solid too
Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, Ample Hills/The Social, L'Albero Dei Gelati.
The butter gelato at the last one is incredible.
Anita Gelato is awesome. The one on 2nd Ave had a line out the door all day from May to October last year. Really great array of flavors available.
