Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some qualities and stories about impressive individuals in the industry:

  1. Unique Abilities and EQ:

    • The smartest individuals often stand out due to their exceptional analytical skills, ability to create intricate financial models, and generate deal flow. However, qualities like emotional intelligence (EQ) and resilience during tough times are also highly valued. Creative minds and the ability to maintain composure under pressure are key traits.
  2. Building a Strong Reputation:

    • People who are well-liked and personable tend to build strong reputations. They are often remembered for how they make others feel rather than just their work. Consistently providing support, staying late, or working on weekends to ensure project success can leave a lasting positive impression.
  3. Passion and Knowledge:

    • Demonstrating a genuine passion for investing and a deep knowledge of the market or business can set individuals apart. Being able to carry on a meaningful conversation about the market is crucial, as many fail to do so effectively.
  4. Personal Stories and Humility:

    • Sharing personal stories that resonate with interviewers can make a significant impact. For example, one individual shared a story about being a first-generation college graduate and meeting a finance industry CEO at a young age, which inspired their career path. Such stories make candidates memorable.
  5. Proactive and Innovative:

    • Taking initiative and going beyond what is required can also help build a strong reputation. For instance, someone who prepared PowerPoint presentations on data discussed in strategy meetings, even when not needed, caught the attention of their director and became a key point of contact.
  6. Networking and Relationships:

    • Building and maintaining relationships at all levels is crucial. Treating everyone with respect, regardless of their position, and being generous with time can help grow one's network exponentially. This approach ensures that people are willing to introduce you to others, making your network work for you.

These qualities and actions have helped individuals stand out and build impressive reputations early in their careers.

My mentor in college solved the Northern/Southern Ireland conflict in what was called the Good Friday Agreement. He had dinner with the leaders of both parties and said "we shall end the dinner walking about in groups of twos" as he thought talking in twos was good and in groups of threes it became political. Shortly after dinner the conflict was ended.

Also, am friends with a global head of IB for MS/GS and he was valedictorian in his class at my school. He is extremely smart and good with people. He has a southern drawl though which makes you think he is a bit slow initially, but he is sharp as a tack and doesn't miss anything.
