Cooking, grilling, smoking, and working a cast iron skillet. Spent more time then I care to admit back in a kitchen, even part time on the evenings and weekends after undergrad to one, stay out of trouble, and two, pay off those loans.

how did you like that? I, like many people, have fantasized about it, but I understand that it is backbreaking work (with thin margins on top of that). One of my close friends went to CIA and has worked at some top of the line places, it looks badass but definitely is intense. iirc, there was a guy here who posted about working in a restaurant group and it sounded wild.

How much time do you have brother?!

You gave me a trip down memory lane asking how did I like it.  The day I turned 15 I applied to work at the grocery store in town.  At the time, minimum wage was over $5/hr and I graciously accepted the job as a union grocery bagger.  On my one year anniversary, I got a 5 cent raise.  When I inquired about this, I was told it had to do with the union.  Meanwhile, I knew people who worked at this dining hall in town that had a bar and grill and banquet hall.  I was 16 and showed up to see if they were hiring.  In fact, stupid me showed up after school in my hoodie and ballcap (what a fool I was, but considering I'm in a hoodie and ballcap now, some things never change).  I met this blond banquet coordinator who said, "You know, we could use some help with setting up and taking things down for events, I could have you help out now and get you on the payroll."  So I accepted and off to work I went setting up tables and chairs.  Then, she comes to me and says, "Wolf, I absolutely hate to even ask, but can you help me?  It looks like someone didn't clean out the kegerator from the last event and it stinks!!  I promise this will be the last time you'll ever be asked to do something like this."  Looking back, I recall she liked looking good for fancy banquets, but didn't like getting her hands dirty or lifting heavy objects (hence young buck me, ha!).  I barely worked here as setting up and taking down took 1 day a week tops.  Then, I got a call one Friday, "Dishwasher's social security number came back with some questions, are you up for learning how to wash dishes?  We will bump your pay $1/hr."  This brought me to about $9/hr as a 16 year old which felt like the big time!"  I worked hard washing dishes and generally didn't mind the work.  I am an introvert (and clean freak) by nature and it was largely working by myself cleaning dishes and organizing kitchen dishes, utensils, and other items.

You didn't ask about this, but I'm painting the picture of how I got to the kitchen.  People in the kitchen are different.  Many use drugs (almost openly), many have done time, and many live a lifestyle on the fringe of society.  There are exceptions yes, but many times the exceptions went to the front of the house to earn gratuities and earn more per hour than in the kitchen.  Dinner line cooks often work from 4PM to midnight or later and then sleep in until 11-12 the next day.  It's a different way of earning a living.  In any case, a sous chef took me under his wing and taught me to cook.  The man was from Brooklyn, NY and ended up near Chicago under some crazy circumstances.  I learned the basics around the kitchen, how to use a knife safely and quickly, cooking to temp, food safety, and so forth.

I'll admit, I didn't really 'make it' as a dinner line cook.  It is the definition of insanity, vulgarity, and stress.  I saw a grown man out of a fancy culinary school come to tears while he was new to the dinner rush.  He didn't quite make it either and became a kitchen manager focusing on inventory, food costs, and pricing.  It's just different.  What you see on a show like Hell's kitchen is kind of a fake reality show.  A real kitchen is WORSE in my limited view.  One of the best line cooks I met was also quite kind to me and said it was the same no matter where you went.  He did quite well as a high school drop out as he could cook phenomenally while managing the stressful rush with ease, jokes, laughs, and even singing classic rock.  He said knowing how to cook is a valuable skill.  Everyone needs to eat, so no matter where you are in the country, you have the skills to get a job and earn a living.  We can't say that about investment banking or management consulting skills to the same degree.

To answer your question did I like it?  Looking back, I loved it.  I worked with some unique individuals, learned my way around a kitchen, can use a knife like a professional, and can work a stove/oven/smoker/grill like someone who's not a noob (not great, but not a noob).  I made it on the breakfast, brunch, and lunch line.  I became good at making eggs, skillet meals, sandwiches, wraps, and so forth.  To this day a good chicken wrap or sandwich melts are my go to and something I can whip up during my lunch break at home.

To those young in your career, I'd encourage you to look at a side hustle/hobby like this.  One, it'll keep you occupied after hours so you're not bored or watching Beavis and Butthead reruns (or worse, blowing money on dumb stuff).  Second, you'll learn a cool set of skills that can aid you in life.  I can't tell you how many times women would light up after I mentioned I was a phenomenal cook and would be delighted to make them a healthy delicious salmon on rice pilaf meal.

Cheers.

If that's the case, go ahead and cry me a river because my Cowboys could've/should've won that game if Dak and Maher had've actually played properly. Two picks and five missed kicks? I mean, c'mon people...! Rush had a spectacular record and Purdy also proved a true rookie can make it happen, but nooooooo...

  2. Jacobitism (the return of a Catholic monarch descending from the House of Stuart, a role currently held in titularity by Franz, Duke of Bavaria as Francis II, King of the United Kingdom, along with the return of the Catholic faith, to the United Kingdom)
  3. Irish republicanism (Due to the founding of a republican government in Ireland in the early twentieth century, in addition to my sympathies of the persecution of Irish Catholics under the British crown, I have consistently refused to recognize any part of Ireland as the territory of the United Kingdom. Talk to me.  Why the Bourbons and not the Orleanists?  Or the Bonapartists, for that matter?  If the question is simply one of dynastic "right" then you arguably have to dismember France, since huge portions of it don't actually belong by dynastic right to the Bourbon (or for that matter, Valois or Capetian) dynasties but rather to various Angevin/Plantagenet/etc English monarchs.  The French conquered... but so did Napoleon.

Moritz Mickelweiß, what's your opinion? Comment below:

You make some good points, my friend, far better than anyone I've met in person. It's clear to me that you're an intelligent figure and that you understand this much more than other people, which certainly makes me think highly of you. I'll detail certain reasons as to why I support the Legitimist cause over its Bonapartist or Orléanist counterparts.

  • For one thing, Napoleon I was a ruthless warmonger whose claim to the throne was not based on descent from Hugh Capet, while the House of Orléans is considered the junior branch of the surviving descendants, with some Legitimists marking them off the line of succession due to their leftist political standpoints and certain members' (exempli gratia, Louis Philippe II, Duc d'Orléans) support for the Revolution. The fact that the House of Bourbon-Orléans is the cadet branch of the House of Bourbon, itself a cadet branch of the House of Capet, is further alienated in my opinion due to Salic primogeniture, which states that only the prémier né is able to inherit the throne.
  • For another, the Legitimist standpoint has outlined rules of inheritance for the monarchy that go back centuries from now. Whether or not these standpoints have been a part of the monarchy since prior to the Revolution remains unverified by my own research at the moment, but I'll detail them anyway.
    • The immediacy of the crown itself does not waver when the monarch passes away, so the prémier né is automatically the rightful king as soon as his predecessor is to die, without any need of a formal investiture and regardless of political issues that may not allow him to take power, such as a political revolution based on hatred of a king and blasphemy against the Catholic faith for France's role as "the eldest daughter of the Church".
    • Due to the theory that the crown and the power with which it comes are not the personal property of the king, it is the belief of the Legitimists that nobody, not even the king himself, can alter the line of succession by abdication, renunciation, or appointment of an heir of his own choosing. This belief is absolutely crucial to people like myself who believe in the Legitimist cause because it regards the validity and right of the Spanish heirs of Philippe V de Bourbon, Roi d'Espagne to take the throne ahead of their distant cousins in the Orléanist line. By abiding to this view we believe that the Treaty of Utrecht was null and void, which means that the so-called Blancs d'Espagne take their rightful place in the line of succession before the Orléanist junior branch.
    • Of course, there is also the matter of the nationality debate and what role it plays in the decision that crowns the monarch. As with certain other parts of this topic, I am unsure which side is correct due to a lack of helpful research answers. Each side has its own opinions on the matter and it is therefore difficult to find out which answer is rooted in history over bickered-over political views.

I should also mention that, due to the self-renunciation of the rights to the Spanish crown by Infante Jaime, Duke of Segovia, known to Legitimists such as myself as Henri VI/Jacques II, Roi de France, my personal opinions on the heir to the Carlist succession are less founded than those on Legitimism. Had the good duke not twice renounced his rights to the Spanish crown, the latter time by request of his eldest son Alfonso, Duke of Cádiz, I would have a secure idea of whom I would believe to be king. If anything, I know that neither Carlos Hugo, Duke of Parma nor his eldest son Prince Carlos would garner my support due to their shared socialist political standpoint, but I wouldn't consider Sixtus Henry, Duke of Aranjuez as a good monarch due to his far-right political views and his friendship with Marcel Lefebvre.

In the end, I'd rather have Louis XX/Luis II on the French and Spanish thrones over Henri d'Orléans, Jean-Christophe Napoléon, Juan Carlos, Felipe, or anyone else that tries to claim them.

I don't follow. Are you talking about the supposed English claim to the French throne via Isabella of France (mother to Edward III)? Because under Salic law, which is upheld in France, the throne cannot be inherited through the female line. The throne therefore passed on to the Valois cousins via patrilineal succession when the senior Capetian line died out.

Even the English monarchs renounced their claim to the French throne around 1815.

I'm a fan of British and American tailoring. So I wear a mix of more English (inspired) suits from Paul Stuart/Spier & Mackay and Southwick/Brooks Brothers for my America stuff. Ideally I'll eventually move towards bespoke, though, since I have a good relationship with my tailor here in the city and he is English, so it would be cool to work with him on something.

Really like the Ivy/Trad look on the weekend too, so I like J. Press, O' Connell's, and vintage eBay stuff.

I also wear Charles Tyrwhitt shirts, almost exclusively, for business ware as they just really hold up and are cost effective. I think I talk about them to much on here, but they make up my entire shirt collection aside from Brooks OCBDs and polo shirts from my company.

literal answer - the meaning of life is to produce, reproduce, die, and decompose

philosophical answer - how I find meaning may not be meaningful to you. I think in simple terms, the meaning lies in the search for meaning. I find meaning in big things like caring for loved ones as well as in little hedonistic pleasures like the first sip of an expertly made negroni after a long day of meetings, and everything in between. but I think the point for me is to always be searching, and at the same time be OK with never knowing the answer, it's a helluva lot of fun, which is why I could talk about it for hours, because if you embarked on the same inward journey I've been on for years, you may find meaning in completely different things, but it doesn't make them any less meaningful.

Star Wars huh? What about their move to scuttle the entire EU after Kennedy took over? I mean 7-9 should've been the Thrawn trilogy, but they bastardized that and took a little here, a little there just to try and string us along. Instead of The Mandalorian, why not make a series or extended movie out of Tales of the Bounty Hunters? Sure, one IG shows up in the Mandalorian, but thanks to ripping off the EU that a lot of us grew up with they take the one copy as a bit of fan service like sprinkling seed out for chicken feed and ignore the entire backstory that there was no IG-11, it was IG-88 and there's actually four of them. And ignore the entire backstory of why THAT ONE is the one that shows up at all. Or that all the bounty hunters were there in Ep5 on the bridge, which is where the EU stories were drawn from, but made 4-LOM into a bitch, and there was no Zuckus to go with him. Not to mention the whole sarlacc escape in the Boba series where in the EU it was DENGAR who saved his butt. And he's nowhere to be found...Can't wait to see how they fuck up the Mara Jade story arc too since they've already done it with Thrawn. They should write their own story called "How to ruin a franchise: What happened to Star Wars?"

STOP TRYING TO MAKE FETCH HAPPEN KATHLEEN! Next thing you know they're going to try and buy up the rights to Legends of the Galactic Heroes for a live-action remake and ruin the shit out of that epic space opera too.

Too often do I find myself talking about work with people in my free time, and nothing takes my mind away like discussing a great book.
