What’s With the Search Function?
Seriously what’s going on with the search function on this site? It has to be the most useless one I’ve seen: the results yielded are more often than not completely unrelated to the query
Is there something I’m missing?
It’s like the Reddit search function: useless. At least Googling your topic + WSO works pretty well
I think the reddit one is generally better than WSO's, but agreed on Google search + WSO. The native search function doesn't work well imo
WSO search function is WHACK
Just use Google. Much better all around
Do search on google and put WSO on end
This really just shows how spoiled we are by Google's search algo. I'm sure 80% of kids on this site don't remember a world before Google, but search was a notoriously difficult problem to solve, and solving it is the reason Google is one of the biggest tech firms to date.
One of the tricks of Google let's you actually search WSO from their site. Type in "site:wallstreetoasis.com XYZ" and it will returns results for XYZ but only with urls that start with wallstreetoasis.com. Same thing for reddit, btw, and you can sort by subreddit by expanding the url i.e. "site:reddit.com/r/financecareers XYZ", etc.
What?! You don't want to Ask Jeeves, or the Lycos dog?! You're crazy I say! Crazy!
Goofy comments aside, there's tons of arguments you can use with Google to narrow down searches like the "site:" argument.
Thanks for the feedback... Can you give us an example. We may have messed it up inadvertently more recently with some tweaks although I'll say we do struggle to yield solid results across a wide variety of query types.
It’d be nice to be able to sort by 2022. That’s not an option when I go to sort on the app. As far as specific examples, just search on this site and then do the same search on google followed by “wso”. Should be pretty clear where the holes are.
should be better now
Just using this to jump in with a side suggestion. If it would be possible to allow for a “sort by date bookmarked” function for bookmarked topics/comments, that would be brilliant!
In queue
As someone who studies natural language processing, making a search engine is significantly more difficult than making an online forum.
I do agree it is sometimes a pain to search a specific topic and find exactly what you’re looking for on WSO
However I can’t even code so I don’t think I can even comprehend the level of complexity it takes to make a more efficient search tool
I’ll just continue my scrolling on the recent and trending pages lol
better now?
Lol. No.
Why does searching 'fitness' return results for "cultural fit" etc. when those threads don't even have the word 'fitness' in them?
Or try 'cycling'. As in a bike. Cycling. Get ready to read about people messing up their "off cycle" internships etc.
