When should I plan on looking/signing on an apartment in NYC if starting in June?

I am starting FT in NYC in the beginning of June and plan on moving there sometime in May. I have roommates already but we aren't sure when is the right time to nail down a place. I am assuming it cannot be this far in advance because landlords will not want to sacrifice three months of rent before a year lease goes into effect. Any knowledge would be much appreciated and happy holidays.

From the little experience I have, generally the rental market in manhattan is for immediate or asap (like starting the 1st day of the upcoming month or even the 15th of the month if you are in the first half of a month) start. If you want to sign a lease starting Jan 1 or something you may have luck now. Otherwise, from what I saw, not sure if you can find a landlord in manhattan who is cool with letting you sign a lease now for may/June. Good luck either way

I moved to NYC in May, signed my lease 2 weeks before, most apartments aren’t posted until a month max before you move in. If there’s a few of you just have a broker find you an apt and split the broker fee if you’re out of state.
