Usually, before you apply you ask them. They can connect you with a hiring manager and you interview. Later you fill out the paperwork.
If you apply formally before and get rejected, there is not much they can do.

Right after you submit your resume to a firm for a summer analyst position, should you notify people you networked with? Or would that come off as too strong/asking for an interview?

You can play it by ear depending on the kind of relationship you have with your contact at the firm(s). Generally it's not an issue at all and puts your name on the lookout. For the 1st round at the firm I interned, I reached out to the MD when I had applied and she got me the 1st round interview.
It's a very random process overall so you should never feel discouraged if you didn't get an interview, but your approach is good practice :)

If you went through a process similar to the one I describe in my networking overview, I do not think there is anything wrong with doing as you suggested. That being said, if you spent sufficient time networking, applying online should be merely an HR formality- your connection should have already passed along your resume.
The thing is, most of my connections aren't that great. I spoke to them on the phone for maybe 30 minutes but I'm not even sure if they remember me lol
Yeah always let them know. That way they remember your conversation and if they haven't passed along your materials, perhaps they can speak to you on the phone post-app, get a good feeling, and flag your resume for the interview process.
Does it come off as presumptuous tho?

Having a little trouble framing this type of email structure to a couple contacts I have at some banks... Should I just straight up let them know I applied + attach my resume for reference? A little stuck.

just say something along the lines of "Hi --, I hope you are doing well. I wanted to follow up and let you that I've formally submitted an application for ---. Hope all is well." I normally don't attach a resume unless explicitly asked by the other party.
yeah I would agree with quixotic. I followed his format but additionally thanked them again for taking the time to share their experiences with me.
Like the others said, kept it brief, thanked them and told them I'll let them know if I move forward. Also update them on how I've been doing if it's been more than 1-2 months since I talked with them.
I usually don't receive any responses to these. Few times had responses wishing me luck and once someone asking for my resume. Usually the ones I had good convos with too so I don't think it's out of politeness. Of course if you don't receive a reply it doesn't mean that you had a bad convo, they could just be busy.
I'd use slydial to leave a vm on their cell if you have it, especially if they're over 40. Emailing a banker essentially gives them a task to complete...to respond to you. It's less of a chore to text you back and you won't get buried under client messages.
When I get a voicemail from some number I don't recognize, I would usually have to find the time to walk out of the office (in case it's too personal or a recruiter) and call the number to retrieve my message... and likely have to sort through other unopened voicemail before I get to the latest one. I would prefer a short email any day.

I have a contact with hiring discretion/jurisdiction. We've been speaking for a while and he said to watch the online job listing as positions are coming very soon and online apps are a formality. So I applied online but I want to let him 'know' that I applied so my name is on his radar.
Should I just be blunt or this is over-reaching?
You should've vined yourself applying online and then tagged him in it. I think he'd get the hint.

I'm confident this has been answered before but I'm having trouble finding relevant threads due to how this question is phrased. Say you have a contact at a bank (higher up one that isn't doing resume screens, or maybe even interviewing for that matter) that you've known for a while, well before SA recruiting season. How would you phrase a simple email to them to basically alert them you've applied? Want to 1) keep updating my contacts but 2) remind them to recommend me for an interview.

I fall on the side of don't blow smoke up my ass so just ask. We all know what you want and it's fine so make the ask. Maybe other senior people want something different but I'm pretty sure when a bunch of college kids cold reach out to me for coffee, advice, opinions regarding the market or whatever else they're not doing so because they think I'm cute, at least I hope not.
