Where Are You Guys From

Why not get a little more personal and see what replies we can get. Tell us where you're from and/or the places you've lived.

Don't mind if it gets anon replies for personal reasons, but would be interesting to get to know some more about the community. Maybe a bunch of you are from the same middle of nowhere town... I'll start.

I'm from Chicago and currently live in New York, although have lived in both Minneapolis and Milwaukee before. Plan to stay in NYC but want to live in London/Paris/Spain as well.

Rutgers omg. I don't think any kid from Edison has ever wanted to go to Rutgers, but the vast majority of them end up there anyway.

How was Rutgers?

Bombay Talk isn’t bad but it’s kind of touristy. Oak Tree has two kind of restaurants 1) the kind that locals go to and 2) the kind that visitors go to. Both are incredible and spots like Bombay Talk straddle the two. Rasoi is definitely for visitors because the only brown people in there are the waiters- all the diners are white.

A good rule of thumb is that the quality and taste of the food is inversely proportional to the ambience and appearance of the restaurant. Next time you visit (if at all), try to find a real shithole of a restaurant. As someone that grew up here, I thoroughly recommend it (also recommend bringing water because it is SPICY)

I'm from the UK and currently live in London, and have never lived outside of England. Been to a quite a few foreign countries though

Really didn't want to live in London originally, but had to because thats where IB jobs are - in the end I ended up enjoying living here. I would only consider moving to NYC for the salary bump, but Americans have a v different culture

Agree we all hate each other. Once saw a Karen wearing a Trump tee yelling at a tatted biker with a MAGA hat to turn his f***ing music down.

From Minneapolis, went to a non-target in the Twin Cities, currently living in NYC, want to live in LA eventually

Why not? I’m not OP but just curious. My best friends from college moved there for jobs and I’ve always thought about making a move out there post B school (or at least for b school summer). The few times I’ve travelled there have been excellent for a number of reasons, but I guess anybody can have fun anywhere if they are with the right people. I’m also from a town where any big city is a massive upgrade so could just be greener grass syndrome

Not sure. Guess being from the cold up north and now getting my fill in New York, makes LA a logical next step since I am not trying to move to the south or return home to MN.

I like the weather of course, different cultures, and slower pace than NYC, I could have the grass is greener syndrome but I wouldn't move unless I had a family on the way, want to max out NYC years as best I can. Why do you think you'll leave LA?

Yooooo, greetings from Caldwell

Couldn't deal with it any longer. Greetings from the other side of the Stickels Bridge. My commute's much easier and the lake house out in Morris County ain't bad either.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

I grew up in a small suburb of Los Angeles right by Orange County, CA. Went to school in OC. I actually got into a few schools abroad but decided to not go last minute, glad I didn’t go honestly (would’ve been pretty dumb of me in retrospect).

I love it down here but love traveling. I need to travel more when it’s safe to do so again.

What is the finance job scene like in Hawaii? I recall a fairly old WSO thread on the elusive finance professionals in Hawaii but I would be curious to know what you would aim to do for work if you went back to the islands.

I believe in bringing my own job if I go back to Hawaii. So maybe work remotely doing my current work, while drumming up some business there so that it’s not totally remote work.

Finance scene is like any typical medium sized city; however, Honolulu is not a financial hub. It is a tourism mecca. Some public companies, a bunch of real estate development companies, one or two REPEs, sprinkle in some middle market PE, we’ve got family offices with a diverse geographic investment mandate, Accounting firms, an independent utility (regulators rejected Nextera acquisition), Banks, our own state flagship airline, military, and hotel and restaurant groups. There is a small VC, incubator community. Agriculture technology, clean tech. There is a CFA chapter there. Some pretty cool private business clubs. If you like golf, you’d love it.

Then you have the remote workers; like my friend who does volatility trading from his house for a mainland firm. I have a former UH professor who teaches an online business course in Vietnam (UH Vietnam MBA) at 3am HST. Lots of business with Japan, Korea; some China.

I want to promote WFH in Hawaii, so I don’t mind getting more into this. I think it would be good for the people and help diversify the economy. If you ever leave Hawaii, a part of it stays with you. I think it’s important that that part is in people when they are in corporate boardrooms or at the highest levels.

My perfect week would be doing deals, teaching my kids to body board and snorkel, and cheer on Hawaii football as they beat a Pac-12 school at Aloha Stadium. I’d have dinner with friends with the freshest sashimi and local cuisine. My company hopefully is employing people with good jobs and teaching them what I’ve learned. It’s a smaller pond so you get to know other professionals really quick. If you think about the future of work, think about where Hawaii could fit in. I think there’s something to it.

Hawaii needs global visionaries, capital, products and services to export, and if set up, the talent will be there with a lifestyle that I want to get back.

Vigo, Spain. It's in the northwest state of the country, Galicia. Extremely beautiful place, very different from the typical Spanish topic (the mediterranean region: flamenco, paella, etc), being similar to Ireland or Scotland inland, and with incredible beaches in the coast. I really encourage you to visit this region if you travel to Spain!

Quality of life is great, but salaries are quite low, and if you want a top job, there's nothing. Finance industry, literally non-existent. So I've been in Madrid for the last two years, and now moving to London in September.

I've visited Galicia - Santiago de Compostela. Its a cool area. I didn't get over to Vigo though. Do you speak Gallegan?

Been in Mass my whole life. Might be moving to Scottsdale late fall. I'm excited and always wanted to move out of New England, but now that it is an actual possibility it is making me nervous tbh.

I live in Dallas. Went to University of Texas and William & Mary.

Would love to move to Louisville, KY of all places. I love it there.

Serious question - did you grow up eating with just your hands or did you use utensils? Or was it just special meals that you ate with your hands in a bonding type of meal?

Born, raised, and going to college in the Philadelphia suburbs. Pretty cool area imo

I’m a fun guy. Obviously I love the game of basketball. I mean there’s more questions you have to ask me in order for me to tell you about myself. I'm not just gonna give you a whole spill... I mean, I don't even know where you're sitting at

Lol yeah that was a rough shot; it ruined my NBA hype and Mother's Day 2019. But I chose the username long before that series because I admire Kawhi Leonard a lot. He can score from anywhere, make plays, rebound, guard any position, and succeed as both a role player and a superstar - all while keeping his head down and staying quiet. On a more positive note, I can't wait for the NBA to resume later this month, and I am really looking forward to seeing what a healthy Sixers team can accomplish after the hiatus.

I’ve lived in Turkey and Hong Kong. I’m moving to London in september for a graduate proprietary trading position; really hyped about it. I would recommend HK for front office internships/jobs as there is little to no income tax. The BBs usually also pay for your rent in a prestigious part of the city(yes even for interns).

Kiev ukraine, Chicago for a bit, some shitty suburbs, some nicer suburbs, then chicago proper. Few different apartments and bummed in a dorm and shit. Apartments in Pilsen and little village mostly. Then first house in mckinley park still chicago. Then second house in Berwyn that's a suburb 20 min west of the city. And I'd really love to love someplace with far fewer people and far more nature and a much slower pace of life. But we just had a baby and providing stability for her is like my #1 shit so idk if another move is gonna be feasible for a long time. And plus we just moved here a year ago and I'm still nowhere near done setting this house up. And it's not work I enjoy. So if we do this shit again I need the kind of money where everything is done for me. I'm not fucking spending three years doing cable management I refuse.

Came to UK when I was around 5-6. Lived in Kent then moved to SE London when I was 10/11. Lived there ever since in different places. Really want to move out now.

Thinking of places like Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks or any place really which has a 30-45m direct commute to London Bridge/Liverpool Str/Cannon Street. Although I don't know if I'll stay consulting long term in which case Victoria is also important commuter hub....dunno what to do.

In no particular order:

Ohio (Oxford), Panama (Ft. Clayton), Bejing (China), Valencia (Spain), Charleston (SC), San Antonio (TX), Biloxi (MS), Virginia (DC area), NYC (East Village), SoCal (Encinitas)

I was a (way) uptown girl for a bit, living north of Columbia on Broadway. Now that I'm a downtown man commuting in on the PATH seems to make more sense. (cue musical interlude)

Need to finally learn French and just move there, really liked that city after I took a 13 hour train to get there. How's the job market for non-French speakers (who may eventually learn French)?

Quant (ˈkwänt) n: An expert, someone who knows more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing.

It's a fun small city if you don't hate snow & cold but the majority of the finance jobs (really small market) are at public pension funds (CDPQ, PSP). You won't have a problem getting a job if you don't speak french. e.g. at PSP ($150M+ AUM) they mostly communicate in english because there are a ton of non french speakers that they recruit from outside Quebec.

Some of us just look out our windows and shake our heads. The WTC memorial and Lady Liberty are nice.

I really like it. It's got a very different feel than Chicago and NYC in a good way but still an urban city feel. After spending so many years in frigid winters, it's really nice to not have to deal with that.  The ability to drive an hour north to wine country, a couple hours east to Tahoe, a couple hours southeast to Yosemite, and south along the PCH to Santa Cruz/Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur is really awesome. Being able to hop on such short flights to LA, Vegas, & Seattle is a nice change. Quite a big U-M alumni network which was great for my social circle since I already knew buddies out here.

Long term I'm probably looking at NYC or Chicago just to be closer to family (would want to be easily able to fly/drive to see my parents once I have kids), most of my friends live in those cities now, and plus I have U-M football season tix with some buddies from school so would be able to see them more and make it out for more games. But SF is a great place for me to spend 5-10 years experiencing the west coast life.
