Where to live in NYC - Middle Aged Couple

Hi WSO,

Parents are moving to NYC and looking for a 1 or 2 bed apartment. Father works in FiDi and Mother is very obsessed with Upper East and West side (not sure why). Trying to make them both happy by suggesting they meet in the middle somewhere. Any suggestions as to where this could be? Budget is $6-7K/month.

Cheers

I've lived in UES, UWS and now Chelsea. I also work in FiDi. I am married but in my late 20's with no kids. I think UWS is a great place for families and I found it to be more spacious of a neighborhood and a decent spot for people who may not want the full NYC experience. You can find some nice luxury buildings right on the river. However, your dad will have a 35min or so commute and I found the walk to the subway a bit annoying (obviously depends on where you exactly live).

UES I found to be a bit younger than UWS, but I was living near 2/3rd avenue which is where a lot of the bars/restaurants are in that area. It is a bit older if you're closer to Central Park, but on the UWS you can have the nice Riverside Park on the Hudson and be close enough to enjoy Central Park. Commute is similar for both.

With that budget, I would take a look at Tribeca, Soho and West Village. Close to FiDi for your dad and very quaint neighborhoods close to the river. Expensive neighborhoods so you don't have the younger, louder crowds that can't afford it.

Battery park city if you want your kids to actually have play space other than the sidewalk. It's also well priced for the area you get and has a real community feel. I'd say they should at least look into it as they might actually find it to be suitable. And if he works in FiDi like me then no need to deal with the whole shit trains situation. It’s amazing walking to work with no train delays, panhandlers and everyday morons agitating him every morning. Plus during the weekends Brookfield place has a lot of family events and in the summer it is actually really nice place.

Ah in that case she will be bored in that area. Tbh living there is great if you want to be away from the noise and activity. I understand now why she would want to live in UES since there is more things to do than battery park city. I am born and raised in Brooklyn so I prefer to stay away from the action and why I like battery park city.
