Who is the funniest character on television?

Ok so, which character is most hilarious, not show. And for bonus points...defend your choice. From the modern pool of choices, here are some possible contenders:

Larry David - Curb Your Enthusiasm
Sheldon Cooper - Big Bang Theory
Phil Dunphy - Modern Family
Ron Swanson - Parks and Recreation
Tom Haverford - Parks and Recreation
Tracy Jordan - 30 Rock
Jack Donaghy - 30 Rock
Barney Stinson - How I Met Your Mother
Eric Cartman - South Park
Randy Marsh - South Park
Peter Griffin - Family Guy
Stewie Griffin - Family Guy
Charlie Kelly - It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Dennis Reynolds - It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Louie - Louie
Taco MacArthur - The League
Rafi - The League
Kenny Powers - Eastbound & Down
Thad Castle - Blue Mountain State
Adam DeMamp - Workaholics
Blake Anderson - Workaholics
Sterling Archer - Archer

Also it's possible I left out some good ones.

BTbankerCosmo Kramer.... Giddy up.

Kramer and George get my votes too. Saul from Breaking Bad is pretty hilarious as well.

This to all my hatin' folks seeing me getting guac right now..

I'm hesitating between Sheldon Cooper and Phil Dunphy but I've had more loud laughs with Sheldon so he gets my vote.

I think that Barney is overrated! He was funny during the early seasons but now he, along with the show, don't make me laugh too much anymore.

I'm breaking the rules because neither are on TV currently, but its a dead tie between Michael Scott of The Office and George Costanza, aka Art Vandelay.

George Costanza because he's a caricature of the poor character that most of us have but hide inside.

Stewie Griffin because his whit is out of this world; he's got this funny, effeminate Americanized English accent; and his confused and unstated sexuality is hilarious in the context of the show.

I do agree with Randy Marsh and Eric Cartman. Randy Marsh is awesome because he's the character most often used to portray society when the writers are making a social commentary. Eric Cartman is just effing hilarious because he's a racist, ethno-centric, homophobic and politically incorrect sociopath and completely oblivious to its lack of social acceptance. In a way Eric Cartman is endearing because his deep character flaws in some way reflect our own character flaws--prejudice, selfishness, greed, etc.

I applaud you for your description of Stewie. Spot on!

Dr. Frasier Crane - a classic character! How could you have missed him out! I think he is in fact the longest running character in the biz at the moment

AllDay_028Taco from the league is getting robbed right now.

Just clicked this thread to write this. Add Ruxin and Rafi to that list too.

Andre works as well. That entire cast is hilarious.

I honestly would add Archer. That character has some of the best lines and that show is incredibly well written.

Also- GOB Bluth (Arrested Development)

Strong. Also, Jobe Bluth.

I like the way you think.

This exchange right here is probably one of the funniest sequences in comedy:

Gob: [in the break room] Yeah, like I'm going to spill coffee all over this $3,000 suit! COME ON! Gob: [at the elevator] Yeah, the guy wearing the $4,000 suit is holding the elevator for the guy who doesn't make that in four months. COME ON! Gob: [in the bathroom] Yeah, like I'm going to take a whiz through this $5,000 suit! COME ON!

Anyway, I would like to throw Sterling Archer (Archer) and Blake Anderson (Workaholics) as some of the funniest on tv.

Ron Swanson and Jack Donaghy are too interchangeable, a lot of their comedy is lifted from each other's shows (not them in isolation but show throughout)

I'll probably get shit for this but I've been catching Happy Endings lately and Brad (latest from long line of Wayans family) is kinda funny. Not funniest but funny.

However, I'd probably go for either Sheldon or one of from League crew.

Barney Stinson - not so funny anymore.

Add that to South Park but remove 'anymore'.

23michI would add my two favorite Simpsons characters to the candidate mix: Homer Simpson and Ralph Wiggum.

Agreed. Homer Simpson between 1988 and 1996 was F-ing hilarious. After the Simpsons got sold to another production company it's been bad--really unfunny--for 15 or 16 years now. I would say The Simpsons is basically unwatchable at this point, but I do enjoy the old re-runs.
