You don’t have to be a pot head to have smoked weed a time or a few. Smoking weed is not that cool. I’d argue it’s become a ton less cool with all the mainstream wonks acting like it’s Coca Cola or Taylor Swift.

Hoping Michael Bloomberg decides to run. Although I doubt he would make it through the primaries. He would have my vote.
Gonna second this. Bloomberg is extremely well respected in the Northeast as a whole, even with the aggressive left side of the party. Hopefully he makes an appearance, at least to move the platform around a little bit.
Yeah. The thing about Bloomberg is he is very much a centrist and would appeal to a lot of democrats, republicans, and those on the fence. He's an astute businessman and was a very popular mayor in NYC.
I agree with you on everything. To add on that he against weed which is massive turnoff for the young left and he's the most anti gun out of all of them. I dont think he wants to spend the next 18 months of his life campaigning. He's 77. If he does run, he could have the best campaign slogan ever with "Elect a real billionaire".
6 months ago I was calling Bloomberg a radical leftist. Now, he looks goddamn moderate. I, too, hope he gets in the race and can possibly pull the Democratic party back from the brink. Setting aside the 2020 race, I'm genuinely concerned about what's happening to the Left parties in the UK and the U.S.
The Labour Party of the UK has gone so far to the Left under Corbyn that the Tories have been able to establish themselves as the permanent party, so to speak, as they've been able to slice off the center-left of Labour. I think PM May is an atrocious leader, and she may be so bad that Corbyn could rise to the PM, but Labour is so unpopular that even as May proves to be one of the least effective leaders in several generations in the UK the Tories are still relatively safe.
In the U.S., I'm concerned about the future of this country with the Dems having shifted to full-front socialism. We really need a thriving Democratic party that embraces capitalism with limits, not a Democratic party that is hostile to our way of life.

As an ex republican I'd likely be voting against that orange traitor, but there's a part of me that loves how much he's screwing things up. Think about it: the more damage he causes, the more intense the upcoming recession will be. If you're all cash, it's the buying opportunity of a lifetime.

A Biden/Beto ticket would win. As for the other candidates, Bernie has spent half a century throwing rocks at the establishment, now he thinks everyone's going to embrace him. Warren is too polarizing and I don't think more extreme politics is the solution. Kamala, Amy, and Cory.....just no.

Trump is usually wrong on the mechanisms of the economy. He's exposed a little more than others to actual economic underpinnings, but he doesn't actually understand them.
When you look at trends and current economic action it seems like two things are happening:

How about Bill Weld? He does not have the name recognition but have strong record of being fiscally conservative and still have a strong libertarian background so he would advocate for less intervention from the government.

I overlooked Biden before. He's ok. The democratic party sucks and I think a vote for a dem is a vote for the party, unfortunately. But not Trumping either. Probably will look for an independent like Shultz too. The only other option would be that challenger in the republican primary, which I'm definitely in favor of.

I can't vote (not a citizen) but none of those would get my vote if I could. If I had to choose, I'd choose the least leftist/statist (meaning not Sanders/Warren/Harris).

I'm voting for whoever the Dem nominee is. I have preferences between the individuals in this group, but honestly it doesn't really matter because it really can't be as bad as the current dumpster fire of a presidency and administration.

You forgot two of the actually semi-reasonable Democrats running: Andrew Yang, who's running as a Democrat on a basically single-issue platform of Universal Basic Income. If I were to vote for anyone in the Democratic field, it'd be him or the other one you forgot, Tulsi Gabbard, so far. That, however, is a big "IF"
As a libertarian/republican who has always thought of universal basic income as the worst idea, I was very impressed with the ideas put forth by Yang.

You were shocked that money isn't actually scarce since we abandoned the gold standard? The only things that are truly finite are the goods and services we use money to acquire.
We're currently experiencing inventory gluts which would be resolved by something such as UBI (not more money for banks and billionaires when their risky investments go south). The rich have lived by MMT for the past several decades via QE and absurdly low rates. This has not led to rampant inflation as the rich do not spend, but save and invest (creating asset bubbles, e.g. housing prices being jacked up far beyond wage growth due to foreign money gobbling up entire neighborhoods who then convert them all to rental properties for the slaves, er, "middle class").
Finally, consider how many jobs, both private and public but predominantly public, are essentially pointless and contribute nothing to society. The fact people are paid to perform these meaningless jobs is already a form of UBI. Eliminate the theatre based on the BS, Puritanical "dignity of work" ethos and just give people below a certain income level a check in the mail. Eliminate all of the patchwork welfare "programs" and replace with means-tested UBI.
I say this as someone averse to not only "big" government, but all government beyond the local level. Like it or not, it has become a necessity brought about by the very nature of the hyper-efficient, technocratic capitalist system under which we live. Or just encourage poor people to start eating each other. Either way, something has to give.

Listened to his interview on Freakonomics podcast. I wasn't impressed. I also think the universal basic income is a solution in search of a problem. Let's reevaluate in 25 years, but right now there is no AI monolith that is impoverishing the mulitudes.

These are basically my feelings. Trump is a complete disgrace but may be the lesser of 2 evils.
Check out Andrew Yang's platform. He has some great ideas IMO, and is different than most of the other democratic candidates. The only questions is whether or not he can grow his following to get on stage.

As a former member of the republican party, I know who I will not be voting for and the person's name rhymes with dump. I cannot vote for someone who gets on the world stage and sides with Vladimir Putin over his own people who have dedicated their lives to serving this country.
This position makes no sense. Trump’s actual policies on Russia have been far more hawkish than Obama’s or Bush’s. There are endless things to criticize Trump about, but not some fake appeasement of Russia.
No love for Tulsi? At least she doesn't have a terrible character and that's something. A bit too lefty on economics, but her foreign policy is what the overwhelming majority of Americans want, so that's a rare bipartisan consensus.
That being said, I'm personally enjoying seeing the media panicking over whether AOC is the best thing ever or a disgrace that will lead to Trump II, no inbetween. The whole point of the ''demographic destiny'' agenda was so that the left could finally do leftist policies, now that they are taking a glance at them, they look batshit insane. I had warned them.

Schultz has made his first big mistake. I think his defense of the free enterprise is laudable, but he's now meeting with the likes of Bill Kristol. There's hardly anyone more disconnected from and hated by the Republican base. His Weekly Standard is shutting down because nobody reads it. He's heavily responsible for the erosion of the credibility of Republicans in foreign policy and his line has been thoroughly rejected in the previous primaries. Republican leaning voters are now even more under Trump's banner than before. Awful choice.
Schultz would have better luck trying to mend the cultural divide by talking with the Heterodox Academy.

If Democrats nominate a reasonable Democrat, I will vote for that reasonable Democrat. If it's something like Bernie vs. Trump, I'll leave the top of the ticket blank and vote on merit for the rest.

Tl;dr: there's little demand for the socially liberal/fiscal conservative position among voters. The quadrant with the highest potential is the polar opposite: economic interventionist, socially conservative. This is the main quadrant of swing voters that shifted from Dems to Trump, but given that the latter's run so far has been mostly in line with standard Republicanism with few exceptions, it can still be swung by anyone with political acumen.
Also pretty interesting that Democrats are the ones with the most ideologically radicated electorate, which explains the push further into the left.
I also read another analysis that spells disaster for Schultz, but I can't seem to find the link atm. As I recall, the key point is that Schultz run at Starbucks signified the beginning of corporate virtue signalling to the left, which antagonizes conservatives. His miscalculation was, and still is, not understanding that gender and race equity (equality of outcome) is a path way towards economic equity, which is outright communism. A similar miscalculation is being done for instance by reputable journals like The Economist, which embraces identity politics and then decries the popularity of socialism among millennials. You can't have one without the other, as the first one creates an appetite for the second one.
In short, what we are witnessing is the collapse of the dominant ''centrist'' ideology of the past 30 years, which now rests on untenable grounds: social liberalism propugnated by universities and social media is simply a prelude to socialism (exemplified by AOC and her Green New Deal) and it's simply not compatible in the medium to long term with free market capitalism.
