Why do rich people play goft? Why not play basketball?
Why is golf considered a luxury sport? I don't get the hype around golf and have never watched Tiger Woods.
I think basketball is way more fun and physical. Draining that deep 3 and running down the court yelling CURRY is more fun! Doing a step back fadeaway and yelling KOBE feels good! Getting someone crossed over and yelling IVERSON makes you feel like a point god!
All that stuff is cooler to me than golf. I'm bias, but for those of you who golf why play golf?
Golfing you go to scenic locations and get hammered with your friends. Basketball is like the exact opposite - you have to run around and get your HR up with no alcohol.
I see, I'm the type of guy that like to bust ass when I play sports. I like to get hammered after it. Golf is too slow for me. I remember when I went to a baseball game and how boring that was. I just can't with golf and baseball LOL!
Damn. Not sure why all the monkey shit. This is basically what Brooks Koepka says about golf....but I guess a lot people aren't big fans of his take on golf either.
Golf is definitely slow at times but the same highlights you mention in basketball can be found with golf (or really any sport for that matter). Stepping up and hitting a great drive on a short par 4, hitting a great bunker shot to 3 feet, or draining a 25ft putt for birdie or to save par. And just like Isaiah said, drinking and gambling on a match with the boys, always a good time!
try playing basketball when you're a 60 yr old exec with a gut
If Michael Jordan can still hoop we all can still hoop!
>If Michael Jordan can still hoop we all can still hoop!
He plays golf now, and he did when he played for the Bulls. He prefers golf.
Have you ever seen a tipsy rich guy play golf? Hard to really tell since most people aren't that good at it.
Have you seen a drunk tipsy guy try to cross over someone in basketball? It's hilarious. They usually trip themselves up. I've seen this happen and spat out my drink while laughing. Guy was belligerently drunk at some party I went to and he drove up in a Ferrari with his wife/kids.
In all seriousness, golf is slower pace and easier to have a full conversation in between swings. Can't say the same about basketball.
LMFAO! I have seen that many times. I have seen it all honestly on the court. I've seen a guy light a blunt and smoke that same blunt with no hands while busting guys ass, talking shit on the basketball court. Dude was tall as fuck! NYC basketball is unlike any other basketball LOL!
But in all seriousness I like to ballout to take out my stress on the court. A lot of people play ball for that reason. It's pretty therapeutic. I've been that way since I was young and it has stay that way. The feeling of busting ass feels good! I can't really explain why LOL.
Business gets done on the golf course not the basketball court.
Chili's is the new golf course. It's where business happens, says Small Business Man Magazine
I hate Chili's.
Why do you ask the most inane questions on this site? You have another question asking why poor attractive girls end up being single moms, what do you do all day? Are you Drumpfy’s alternate account?
If shit is actually stupid why you commenting? Stay on your own lane and do your own thing and stop reading my posts bro.
Golf is just better, and harder. I am guessing you have never played? And I wouldn't exactly say golf is a luxury sport, a complete set of clubs can cost around $100 (used) and last years.
Jesus are you using irons from the 70s? A wooden driver?
You can get a cheap set of Ping Eye 2's for around $100, they are almost as good as new irons today (this has been tested many times). You can get a a used driver (old Big Bertha) and blade putter for cheap. You definitely don't need new golf equipment. Golf is not a luxury sport by any means.... it CAN be... just like anything else.
Golf and skiing are the most popular luxury sports IMO. Luxury because there is no way you can say that regularly doing these sports isn't expensive. Probably missing others, but golf is definitely a luxury sport, even your tinder match to mini golf can be "expensive" (depending on how much you rely on this idea).
Polo, falconry, space travel. These are the real luxury sports. Get your weight up son.
The true answer is the majority of people (75%+) , even across social classes and professions, are just brainless followers. Upper middle class individuals arent different.
- Go golfing
- Get a Traeger or a Green Egg
- Get a YETI cooler
- Start a nice bourbon collection
- Get excited about the Masters
- Watch the same sports, entertainment, etc.
Do some people genuinely enjoy this stuff? Eh, sure. But most people just blindly follow because that's what the social norm is and never really stop and ask themselves what they enjoy or want from life. Either they lack the self awareness to do so or the intellectual bravery to question themselves a bit.
So to answer you question golf sucks
this post screams "i'm allergic to milk"
whatever the hell that means
Based af. You triggered me with the Masters comment tho lol. It's Disney World for dudes.......but I guess if I really think about it, your overall message definitely applies to Disney World too and by extension the Masters.....
Struggling with this a little bit myself. Early 30s and my friend group fits that mold to a T.
Seems like everyone my age has the same Saturday routine: golf early AM -> pool -> grill / smoke something
I find golf to be beyond boring but don't want to miss out on the social aspects.
Yea it's like the evolution of Total Frat Move to Barstool Sports to whatever it is now lemming behavior
LMAO this is amazing
I've gotten less and less enamored with golf the older I've gotten, it's an empty pursuit. it's a fun thing to do with a large group of dudes, but beyond that it's such a waste for me.
that said I'm also not a fan of basketball, so whatever
Golf isn't considered luxury in all parts of the world, it is NOT considered posh in the UK at all. I have mates from all walks of life who play golf. Whether it is an interesting "sport" or not, is up to each individual.
Also, rich people really don't all focus on golf - I have friends who go sailing, power boating, collect cars, drive on a race track, collect stuff nobody needs, travel the world, etc... there is a lot you could declare a luxury and people certainly don't all just golf all day.
I think golf is actually considered a luxury sport. To drive a golf cart, have a caddy all takes money. Plus, going to the nice golf course with great views ain't cheap.
Your example is correct. But you don't necessarily need a caddy or have to golf in Hawaii.
Just like any other hobby, there is a range of opportunity to make it more affordable for the masses.
Testing your drive at Topgolf is not making your skills any worse than teeing off in the Maldives.
That's not true. Basketball is the king in sports. You've got lebron/kobe rookie auto cards selling for 6 to 7 figures. Golf is hardly a sport that is popular. It's only popular among the wealthy people thus considered a luxury sport.
Bruh basketball is not the king in sports. The NBA's ratings suck. Basketball is boring to watch unless its March Madness... like honestly I'd rather watch the Masters than the NBA playoffs.
Definitely some of the best athletes. You will see college basketball guys go to the NFL b/c they can't quite make it in the NBA.....you never see it the other way.
It’s all about long range projectile. Somehow guys just bond over seeing a ball fly really far and hit a small target that is hard to hit. Suspect it goes back to hunting & gathering days without the gore.
Haha I like this take.
All of my buddies only ever care about hitting "bombs." I'm like cool you rolled it out to 305 yards into a trap and I know you're so pumped about the overall distance, but I'm still going to beat you by 12 strokes so who effing cares.
It's all fun and games until you come off a screen and posterize your MD.
I think there's a simpler explanation... You have a 4 Hour window to shmooze while playing. Other sports don't give you that luxury.
1. Golf is considered a luxury sport because its expensive. You have to pay a fee in some way every time you play or practice. Basketball, on the other end, is extremely low cost. Basically you're comparing what may be one of the more expensive sports vs the least expensive sports. Maybe sailing and soccer would be the limits.
1a. There are actually a lot of daily fee, muni golf courses that make up the majority of golfers, but people don't think about those places typically when they think of golf.
2. What makes golf considered luxury in the eyes of most is the club factor. People join country clubs for the enjoyment but also because it shows prestige. Theres virtually no basketball "clubs", but if you could join one for $500K they could get pretty luxury pretty quick.
True luxury sports are actually sports. Being a golfer means you are likely a fat sack of shit
You're an idiot
Olympic Club in SF has an elite basketball club/league..... along with the amazing golf course. Not sure if there are other clubs like that with both.
Golf, my favorite drinking game.
One of these sports poses risk of injury and pretty difficult to play in old age and was only invested in the last century….
The other requires far less effort, involves scenic locations, alcohol, golf carts, and time to have good conversation with friends. Not to mention the long historical pedigree associated with it and thousands of prestigious clubs with well known members. Hmmm I wonder
I’ve seen many people get injured from playing a pickup game of basketball in the gym. Golf doesn’t carry that risk.
I mean I get it. Injury is more common with physical sports, but ain't nobody playing crazy hard at a gym for no reason and if they are, then they are aware of putting themselves in position to get injured so that is on them. Injury is also very common to those who don't take care of their body and stretch before games. If most people stay fit/stretch before pickup games they should be alright.
If you keep playing for years and years, the probability that you'll eventually get a major injury like an ACL or Achilles tendon tear is pretty high. Even apart from the expense and the physical pain, the sheer inconvenience is enough of a reason to avoid it. For a 20-year-old college kid with no real responsibilities it's one thing, but for a 47-year-old with a wife, multiple kids, and a senior management position, surgery, crutches, and rehab for months is a massive pain in the ass.
Grew up playing soccer.. still play in a coed league.. and I recently took up golf (about 3 years ago). If I had to choose one, I'd take golf 10/10 and wish I played growing up. Here are a few reasons why:
- euphoria: hitting an iron pure on a tough shot landing right by the pin is one of the best feelings in sports. I grew up playing soccer (keeper) and still play in a coed league.. apart from really great saves, hitting shots pure is a better feeling.. and they happen a lot more frequently
- social aspects: There's a reason deals are made on the golf course and not on the soccer pitch or in the arena. It's easy to hold a conversation and build real relationships on the course.. not to mention golf is a chill game you can play while hammered, my buddy shot 1 or 2 over last week after 2 tall cans and 5 12 oz's. Not crazy impressive... but to be able to compete while drinking.. it's nice.
- progression: unlike other sports where it can be difficult to track your specific stats.. in golf you're scored (an punished or rewarded) for every shot. Slice, fade, draw, straight up shank whatever... it's easy to keep track of how you're playing and see real improvement over time. For the competitive folks.. this can be a really good or really unhealthy thing once the addiction begins
- limitations: golf is a sport you can play lifelong across generations. I've once played in a 4 some with a kid, his dad, and his grandpa. That's pretty neat and there aren't many other sports where this is feasible in a competitive environment.. and because everyone has their own handicap... it really can be competitive.
IMO.. greatest sport out there.. just sucks it can take a while to get good enough it's fun and the costs can make it a little prohibitive.
Love this.
What's your take on the time commitment? I love that after 90 minutes of playing soccer, I get a great sweat and then can go do whatever I want for the rest of the day.....Golf kills your whole day. Like that's the only thing you're really going to do that day.
I'm still young (m20's) so time commitment isn't a huge draw. Older folks I play with though try to get in the early morning rounds.. 630-8 AM tee times.. that way they can be back to the house for wife/kids by late morning/early afternoon. Thankfully I'm not there yet.. but yeah.. the time commitment is kinda rough. Between range time and playing full rounds.. definitely gives me less time to study for the CFA but oh well.. not gonna sacrifice everything lol. Hopefully when kids come into the picture they'll appreciate the game and that'll give me an excuse to play more hah.
You can walk nine in under two hours. I am a terrible golfer, and I can walk nine in 90 minutes.
Greatest sport because it's not really a sport. Here is why golf sucks:
- not a sport, doesnt help you physically in any way. Best sports actually help with health and longevity
- Takes a long fucking time. 4 hour commitment? Have to usually get up super early to play? Yea fuck that
- Boring , slow, uneventful
- Cost - have to pay decent amount just to play. Sure it keeps the poors out, but still a negative.
Now Im not biased, there are undoubtable pros:
- Networking - best sport bar for this. But golfing is still mainstream. You meet an executive and say you golf, wow no one cares. You say you do something else that rich people do (cycling, nordic skiing) then you have a true engaging conversation. But yea for business deals on the course cant be beat
- Scenic locations - golf courses are artwork, no denying this
Better affluent sports:
- cycling, triathlons, tennis, skiing
I do enjoy skiing more than golf, for sure. To me it is more a hobby than a sport.. kinda like running. I don't do either of those "to win" so they don't really fall in the sport category to me. But I would disagree with the uneventful, boring and slow comment.
Rich people are old
I can tell you’re not a prestigious person.
this fucking dude makes me laugh so fucking hard with these posts please PLEASE never stop
I don't think it's about rich vs. poor here. Golf is a sport that allows you to be competitive with minimal exercise (relative to other physically-strenuous sports such as basketball, squash, football, field hockey etc.). I very much doubt that people who pick any of these sports at early ages (pre-18) do so because it is considered an "elite" sport. It might be due to some acquired interest from watching it on TV, or somebody in their family getting them to play it. Who decided that "golf" is a business sport is beyond me. Ask them. You play what you're good at or have an interest in.
Tennis and Golf. I love both and take the time to play both. They both provide amazing networking opportunities. You can spend more time on the courts and on the golf course pitching and talking relatively to a coffee shop.
Am I the only 30 - 40 year old on this website that isn't a clone?
golf and traegger bro!
Sometimes there is wisdom in what the crowd says
There would be too many BSDs on the court and CXOs and MDs don't wear jockstraps.
Nobody wants to see that.
Because wealthy people are generally older, and basketball isn't kind to a 65 year old man's knees.
Also, while playing golf can be inexpensive (clubs aren't crazy expensive for something not top of the line, and municipal courses aren't either), really good courses and clubs cost tens of thousands of dollars to join and thousands to stay a member of, which is a level of disposable income most people don't reach. And that is without talking about the real elite courses like Shinnecock or Augusta or Kiawah - six or seven figures to join, if they even let you. Bill Clinton was on the wait list for Winged Foot for years!
What are some good gyms with indoor basketball courts that have 5v5's going in NYC? Or good outdoor courts?
