Why do you watch television/sports?

May be people enjoy watching teams and players compete.  Watching sports is a typical male bonding experience and it is kind of difficult to bond in a garden. 

I don't have much free time during the week but there is nothing quite like sitting around a tv with a bunch of your boys with some wings and cold brews watching some football. I don't think many people on this site really have the capacity to watch so much tv that it effects their life that much, but football on sundays is sacred 

Agree with you on wasting time watching brainless TV but majority of forum will disagree on sports. I've cut the cord and pretty much watch my teams or NFL RZ and its how I decompress after completing work, exercising, cooking, cleaning, whatever is going on that day. Also its how most of my friends bond.. most dudes like getting drinks and watching the game not doing puzzles.

Agree on watching sports, but still think there’s a lot of value to be had in watching quality TV and film.

Yeah I watch sports - mainly poker. 

Because it is entertaining and I enjoy it. It is a good way to relax and decompress (at least for me... and many others based on viewership). Don't take everything in life so seriously- you don't need to be one of those annoying people who thinks anything that isn't "bettering themselves" is a waste of time. 

I would disagree in the sense that watching sports and TV can be a great way to decompress and relax like others have said, but obviously moderation is key. But I will agree that its pretty sad when you see someone whose entire identity is professional sports, assuming they don't play it themselves. Easiest way to pick out these people is whichever ones refer to their favorite team as "we". Watching sports isn't bad, but grown men making their identity whichever sports teams they like most certainly is. The problem is that sports, especially North American ones like football and hockey, are so often marketed as "manly" that adult men think it makes them cool or tough because they're super into it, which sadly is very common today in the US. Playing sports is manly, having sports fan as a main personality trait is not.

I love sports and honestly the only time I watch TV is to watch college football, NFL, or golf. I also like to gamble so I really only watch on the weekends, maybe the occasional Friday round of a golf tournament on my computer. To the above poster, it’s not a personality trait for me, I don’t bleed XYZ team’s colors, nor will XYZ team losing ruin my day/week.

I enjoy sports, not a big TV guy outside of a couple shows I would binge-watch in college. 

For sports, I grew up in the midwest playing multiple sports. It's nice to watch excellence in something I was once involved in, just like a musician enjoys watching the top performers perfect their craft. Where I'm from, every able-bodied male played sports it seemed like. And then I went to a P5 school with big time football and basketball being played so it was cool to keep up with, also seeing players I once played with or competed against playing at a high level. 

Went to college and pro sports games growing up, and there's nothing quite like waking up at 5:30 to drink/tailgate with the boys for a home game in college. 

There are many different types of sports fans. You never want to be the guy who people cant plan anything with on Saturday/Sunday because that time is reserved just for football. Or the guy living vicariously through others instead of their own accomplishments (if you would go crazy seeing an athlete or frequently wear another mans name on your back then probably need to reevaluate). As someone once said - it's better to sweat yourself than to watch others sweat. Almost any activity is either producing or consuming, the more you produce the happier you will be. Be more proud of yourself for finishing top 10% in your city's marathon than your team for winning a big football game. It's one thing if you cancel plans for the weekend to watch your alma mater Alabama play Ohio State in a season deciding game. It's completely different to carry around a portable TV during wedding pics to watch your alma mater Alabama beat a directional university by 50+ in week 3 of the regular season (this happened at a wedding I was at years back)

THAT SAID sports and quality entertainment are very nice after a busy week to unwind. Also a lot of social events (cook outs, tailgating, etc. ) are built around football and perfectly healthy/beneficial to partake. If you are going to waste time best waste it with others and enjoy friends/family company. Sports are unique in that they are one of the few unifying forces in our lives - at least in the lives of men. I can be at the gym and bump into someone who visually I can tell I have zero in common with in terms of background, profession, education, social status, etc. but man it's still nice to give em a fist bump based on the shirt they are wearing and say "how bout them Cowboys"

Why do you spend your time waiting for answers to questions that you should be too "productive" to have time to read? 

Good sports provides some spontaneity in what can be a very routine life as would be evident if I spent my time exclusively doing what you've described. 

It's funny how much conservatives watch sports.  Athletes will do everything they hate, but conservatives will still spend their time making them rich!

Rest is just as important as exercise.

I don't get it 

I only watch formula one racing because of the nature of the sport. Apart from that I do not watch any other sports. To be honest I get bored very quickly with them.

I meet friends

I run

I clean my house

I tend to my garden

side hustles are stupid

I post plenty (probably too much) on WSO

and I still find time to watch football
