Will there actually be a draft and what happens to our jobs if there is

The last time we saw a draft was in the 60s but warfare has changed since then and we have a larger number of people volunteering for the military so it looks like a full on draft might be unlikely not saying it is impossible though.

I just read online that the cut off age for drafts in the USA is 25 so that means if there is another one, a lot of banks will be losing their Analysts and Associates, I guess banks will ramp up hiring women to reduce the damage of this but it would still be tough to fill in every post across banks, PE, VC, HFs, tech firms and startups so I predict they will greatly reduce their hiring standards which might permanently change banking and finance forever, by the time we get back investment banking and PE might be part time minimum wage jobs and the flood of returning talent might further drive down wages.

For those of us under 25 and in finance right now will you try and dodge the draft? or actually attempt to go fight some 6'7 russian who has been training with bears in the snow to avenge his fathers death

Laughed out loud at this. As if, women screaming for equality is a BAD THING?? I recommend deleting this and putting your head on straight. We aren’t living in the 19th century.

He's not. There exist a dichotomy right now where women can enlist voluntarily, but are not legally required to register for selective service. They tried to open it up before in the 70's, but that went all the way to the Supreme Court and didn't make it. There's current legislation in the pattern to open it up to everyone 18-25 again, and this time it probably has a lot more cultural weight behind it considering it's no longer just about two sexes, now it's all about gender, sexual orientation and new additions to physical and mental disabilities that would DQ someone from service. Now it looks like it's been raised to the point of either everyone has to register, or no one registers anymore.

lol no

Looks like the current age range is of course 18-25, and since you can enlist until you're 35 that's the top of the possible age range and supposedly if you've served before or were commissioned before you can get called back past the age of 35.

So no draft for me while I enjoy the ability to legally drink and rent cars etc while you can go die for some pointless war that no one wants or thinks is necessary. 'Murica!

K-Peezy

This isn’t exactly true. USN and USAF go up to 39 without an age waiver for active duty. With an age waiver, you can join even older for certain positions.

Settle down with the neocon guilt tripping. Almost if not every war the US has been involved in since the War of 1812 should have never happened or our presence was greatly exaggerated. One thing that Trump demonstrated is that strength can be shown through targeted measures such as sanctions, economic trade regulations, and targeted attacks. Ridiculous all-out wars are unnecessary and only result in the military industrial complex getting wealthy, and many young men losing their lives leading to a great number of widows and kids who will never see their dad.

Don't know why I didn't see this earlier but I am convinced the MSM can convince most liberals to be for a draft.

They convinced Liberals that Biden's presidency is better than Trumps despite the shit show we are in from gas prices to inflation to getting involved with Ukraine and Russia. They convinced liberals that if you don't get vaccinated with a booster and wear a mask you should lose your job and in some cases your kids. They convinced liberals that the guy Joe Rogan had on his podcast, who literally was one of the creators of the vaccine was spreading misinformation because he said the vaccine was not that useful compared to other treatments. They convinced Liberals that jailing criminals was bad. They convinced liberals that anyone who does not agree with them should be deplatformed and made to lose their source of income.

These people call themselves "liberals" but are so far to the left they have started encroaching on Nazi territory when it comes to how blindly they are following the atrocities being pushed on them. I do not think convincing Liberals that they should sign up to fight Russia would be hard, they would just say this war is because of Trump somehow and blame the Republicans for starting it then you'll see the MSM advertising the draft with Amy Shumer

I'm not against having a draft, if my country needed me to fight I would do it.

That said, I think a draft would probably create a bigger divide in the country, bigger than anything currently going on. As the OP said, there would most likely be a lot of draft dodgers based on exemptions, people flocking to Canada, or people outright disappearing. Then they would have to figure things out along the lines of gender, race, sexual orientation, citizenship, age, family situation. The "discrimination" people would proclaim would be unbearable. On top of that, the way people are now there would probably be another Civil War in America when the drafted war was over between soldiers and the draft dodgers I stated above.

Though, I'm sure there were a lot of people/situations like this in prior wars where we had drafted, just didn't get reported on. Not everyone was Saving Private Ryan.

Yeah after failing in Afghanistan like the Soviets, I really want to see how liberals would fare against General Winter which defeated Napoleon and Nazis. Best of luck!

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

Yep, god forbid we have affordable education, healthcare or paid time off!  That'll destroy America!

No draft for a number of reasons:

  • It would cause mass civil resistance (remember that Biden now has as a more invasive version of the Patriot Act to work with because domestic terrorists are the greatest threat to our democracy since shitposting, but regimes tend to be their harshest when least stable)
  • Everyone who would ever want to go fight Russia is already in the military
  • If a war ever got to the point that we needed a draft, then we've already lost

Biden's poll numbers are so bad that he's doing anything he can to pump them up. Apparently he begged Saudi Arabia to increase oil production (after railing on them during his campaign and vowing to make them a pariah after the killing of Kashogi) to curb some inflation & take some heat off him but they gave him the middle finger

honestly I hate inflation as much as the next guy but watching Biden get rekt in the midterms will make it at least somewhat bearable

Biden needs to open back up the Keystone pipeline. What a dumb move to close it and also 13,000 people lost their jobs.

If we ever fight China / Russia / India the U.S. will need a draft....and if that scenario ever arises that means we're screwed. Even if we win we lose as it's going to be a Phyrric victory

U.S. and India are neutral. U.S. would like to form closer ties but India is deeply skeptical of U.S. commitment (and I don't think the Afghan pullout helped remotely with this). And India is deepening military ties to Russia as well, which again the U.S. doesn't like

There's a book called the Kill Chain which I heard about in a pod, written by a former Senior DoD guy. He says (which is factually true, look this up) that in every internal DoD simulation of the U.S. fighting China (as in us going over there, the Chinese have no interest in coming here if they take Taiwan), the U.S. gets handily beater. Every time, without fail. This is why I highly doubt the U.S. would decide to go to war over Taiwan as we'd get destroyed. Moreover, we can't even impose heavy sanctions without crushing ourselves economically. So at the end of the day, China is pretty well set to take Taiwan this decade

Thanks agree with all your points.

Why does it matter if Georgia / Ukraine join Nato? Would't European nations still protect them if they were invaded? Why is Putin getting so triggered? Would the extent of US troop deployment be limited to special ops?

Congress has to vote to authorize a draft, and the President has to sign it like any other law; it seems everybody forgets that. The military doesn't just get to draft.  No politician is going to risk losing reelection, and voting for the draft is a death sentence in the primaries. Ukraine's geography, and Eastern Europe in general, is relatively flat. There is not much drafted foot soldiers could do that stuff like drones can't since there's no dense jungle to hide in like in Vietnam.

It is my opinion (purely my opinion) that we'd be more likely to see the use of tactical nukes in Ukraine before a draft would even be seriously considered by a majority of Congress.

“Russia expert says 'blitzkrieg-type' attack could begin as early as 8 pm tonight.

Rebekah Irina Koffler goes on to say:

'Having recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics and signed treaties today, Russia will almost certainly deploy armed forces, imminently, to occupy these breakaway territories. Putin has already authorized the deployment of “peacekeeping” troops into Eastern Ukraine.

Russian offensive operation against Ukraine will likely begin at 8 pm Eastern time and may not be limited to occupying Eastern Ukraine. Moscow is waging a propaganda campaign that lays out the pretext for an incursion into Ukraine proper. Russia may launch a large-scale air and missile bombardment of key military and government command and control facilities in major Ukrainian cities, preceding a ground incursion.

I cannot rule out the possibility of Putin’s authorizing a “decapitation” strategy, targeting Kiyv, to force Zelensky to flee, so Moscow can install a pro-Russian leader. At minimum, a crippling cyber warfare campaign will target Kiev, including its power grid.

This will be a swift blitzkrieg type operation. Whether Putin decides to target only Eastern Ukraine or Ukraine proper, Moscow will declare victory on February 23, the Soviet Army Day.'"
