Work Ethic by Age or Technology?
Being a young person, I have noticed many of my peers have attention problems in low-stake corporate environments. Haven’t had enough experience to talk about ‘high finance’, but I am curious as to whether this low effort is a consequences of age (noticed many senior staff are pretty much always on it), technology (TikTok/Youtube draining attention) or work (bitch work is easier to procrastinate on than meeting work).
Based on the highest ranked content on WSO, the question of work ethic being influenced by age, technology, or the nature of work itself is quite nuanced and multifaceted. Let's break it down using the insights gathered:
Age Factor:
Technology Influence:
Nature of Work:
In summary, it's not just one factor but a combination of generational differences, the pervasive influence of technology on our attention spans, and the nature of the work itself that contribute to the observed work ethic. Younger employees might find it challenging to engage deeply with tasks that don't resonate with their values or fail to capture their diminished attention spans, a direct consequence of the digital age. However, it's also crucial to recognize that these observations can vary widely among individuals and are influenced by personal values, goals, and the specific work environment.

age
Definitely technology. So many people are addicted to the instant dopamine hit of the next TikTok video, and it affects everyone who uses the app. ADHD diagnosis rates are way up, and standardized test scores are plummeting through the floor. IMO TikTok represents a clear and present danger to America. It is killing the minds of young people like a drug. Over the next few years, I fear that the labor force will be compromised as a result of short form content ruining the ability of people to focus. Of the people in my stats class, the average screen time is over 4 hours a day, most of it spent on unproductive things such as YouTube and TikTok. Using media for education is one thing, but based on the last few years, there is no doubt that apps such as TikTok are lowering the intellectual capacity of its users.
No one wants to hear/ admit this, but it's the truth. I wonder if it'd ever be a good thing tho - less competition for the focused people.
I've been diagnosed with ADHD, but I don't use TikTok, and my attention span is still considered to be good for my age. It's truly horrifying what that app is doing to teenager's brains.
Attention span is very low among young people these days
