Working hours and work/life in finance
I'm quite lost at what area of finance I should pursue a career in.
Salary is NOT as important to me as work/life balance and less stress. Work that is not too tedious/boring is a bonus.
I know that I cannot have everything, but what kinds of jobs would be best?
I'm thinking corporate finance, private equity (is PE particularly difficult to get into?), venture capital, hedge fund, maybe commercial banking.
What kind of working hours can I expect? Stress? Dynamics of work?
Thank you so much!
assuming you're not a troll (good luck getting into PE without 2 years of brutal IB exp) not to mention, PE isn't really what most people would consider work/life:
I am a big commercial banking advocate for work/life in finance along with attractive pay.
The two main paths are Credit and RM (Sales). At most banks you'll need 2 years of credit exp at least before moving to the sales side. The sales side def has the potential for very good pay, where as in Credit you'll likely never cross $130-150k in today's dollars unless you become a regional credit officer etc. The sales side can be interesting as for smaller companies, you can really be their "quarterback" when it comes to guiding them financially... but it is def more sales than anything
Corp Fin is also a good option, although you need to do you DD. I've heard some company's FP&A team work 40 hours almost every week, and I've heard of some that average closer to 55-60 hours a week.
