Writing a rec letter for my analyst

My analyst will be applying to grad school soon and has asked to write a rec letter for him. Ive only gotten very generic letters but I like him so I would like to write a good one. Any tips, examples, or things I should generally have in mind?

I don’t think you would be best served by a template, so instead I’ll go over some high level points of potential themes.

What you want to do is make your Analyst seem like a great fit for the program. In order to do that, you need to understand what sorts of characteristics they want. In general, graduate programs like these things:

1) being studious and able to handle the curriculum itself. Very basic. Very obvious

2) being likely to succeed financially. You want to paint the picture that this is a highly enterprising person who doesn’t give up and is determined to do their best and make the most out of everything. This segues into…

3) being a generous sort of person. The best bait for a graduate school is telling them that someone is bound to be successful and will give back in some way. They love donations. Show, don’t tell. Give examples of a generous or benevolent spirit.

4) other good attributes like honesty, sociability, or quantitative or qualitative skills.

To the extent possible, you should have anecdotes of this person where their behavior makes these traits obvious. This is far more powerful than you saying something outright.

As always, grammar and proper tone are vital, but I’m sure you know that. Those are my thoughts. Cheers
