Or let non cert users be able to view the chat, but not post anything
This right here is the dumbest fucking idea I have ever heard.
As long as it wouldn't be too much of a problem, I would be fine with people getting voted in.
"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."
I don't think a lot of these kids understand that the chat is just that... a chat.
For those that don't get it, rarely are (well, were) people discussing work in the chat. They're shooting the shit about random topics and occasionally discussing what life is like at their jobs/how to break in/whatever.

Late to the party here, but I would make the use case for the chat room as a legitimate career resource, even beyond the immediate functionality of giving/receiving career and investing advice.
This past month I literally referred a friend (who I met on the WSO chat) to a headhunter at a top shop and the person got the job (lateral move, not an entry move). Neither of us are/were certified users.
There's an opportunity being missed here and I'd consider exploring some sort of middle ground resolution. Maybe take a look at DM's idea? idk.

losing faith?! ....that hurts. please know that each decision to block is carefully considered after repeated warnings to the violating user (especially someone that has been around for so long).
that being said, we can't make repeated exceptions for 1 user and expect other problems not to keep coming up. We've applied the guidelines as consistently as we possibly can.
Ask yourself this - would you prefer the free for all we had 1 year ago when there was 3-4 troll comments in every thread which pushed away / distracted from a lot of helpful advice? maybe you would, but that isn't the type of environment we want here...while it's a bit more boring, it's also more welcoming to professionals -- we've added a record # of certified users, have had a ton of Q&As and AMAs recently and we expect that trend to continue. I think part of that improvement has been blocking the most immature users that try to use WSO as their own comedic experiment.
What's so great about it? And how does WSO make money off of it? I assume they make nothing, which makes me wonder why they would make it available to anyone.

I brought this up in the monthly CU conference call this week. You're welcome guys :P I think there's a right mix of supply/demand maintenance to have quality while still preventing trolling/malicious behavior on the chatroom.

Once you're banned, no matter how much you plead you can't gain access again because we don't have the mod power to police / ban and unban a bunch of users.
Sounds like a great idea. If policing it is the problem why don't Pat et al make 4-5 users they trust mods in the chat?
Because even if there are 4-5 mods, many times they won't be in the chat.
Anyway, let's give this another shot, with a 1 strike and you're out policy.... I think about 50% of the members in this thread asking for chat will likely get banned from it within 2 weeks, but hopefully I'm proven wrong:

Change this
The chat was open until a bunch of kids started acting like morons and breaking the ToS. It's not going to be reopened to everyone.
Sad but true. I fuckin' loved 99% of the people in there. It's that fuckin 1% screwing up everything again. #America
chat got me an internship. no lie.
could use it now with upcoming interviews... plz.
Febreeze, how have you been brah?
chat was the best thing to ever happen to this website.
If it's possible to do, I'm all for this. Either that or just a ban function for chat only would be great.
I believe there was a ban function already when chat got taken away from the masses, the problem is they can't police the chat 24/7.

He did, but that still wasn't enough. There are still periods when certified users (usually the only people he knows and can trust) aren't around.
