Which department should I go with?

Hey guys,

I got an offer to intern with UBS. They gave me the choice of either operations or wealth management. Ideally, I would like to go into private equity afterwards. In the eyes of recruiters, which one would look better, operations or wealth management?

Thanks!

Any idea what you'd actually be doing there?

Imo, wealth management would generally be considered better than operations, but if all you're going to be doing is cold calling, I'd go with operations.

I am not entirely sure as to what I'll be doing to be honest. The interviewer said that I might be involved with calling, but that I would be given more responsibility over time.

What do you want to pursue?

If I had to do it all over I would take something like the operations internship. I did a wealth management internship and didn't get much experience in anything except for cold calling. However I cold see an operations internship as a learning experience in introducing you to how the ins and outs of the bank works.

Regardless, it would be wise to supplement either of these with a FO internship later on.

I basically want to get as much as I can out of this internship. I want to learn a lot so that I can use the skills that I learn at a future internship/job.

I'm sorry, but what is a FO internship?

nyc1903I mean, I know that it stands for "a front office internship", but what types of internships/departments are you talking about when you mention FO?
^ IBD, AM, S&T, ER, one of those. Ask the recruiter if you can do PWM part time during the semester. If so, then you'll have more time to use that to network to other areas of the company.

OPS internships almost always terminate at the end of the summer, so come September you'll be out of the system and on your own again. Having a job always makes it easier to get a different job. If you're there even part time / weekends, you'll have access to the internal job board and company directory, as well as meeting random people in the hall, by the water cooler, in the lobby, etc... who may just be able to help you later on.

Normally, I wouldn't even bother commenting on your post at all once the word Columbia came up, but this year the competetion is absolutely brutal. Recruiting season has kicked off at the time of an announcement of 40K jobs being cut across the industry with potentially more to come. Tap your alumni network and start lining up the next thing IMMEDIATELY upon starting your internship: do not wait because you'll likely not get a second chance.

You got this. Kill it.
