Your chance to affect on somebody's fate | 20 y/o looking to step up in Madrid
Hey, WSO!
I need your advice. I am a 20 years old second year student (non target in EU, target in my country) related to economics in one of the northern EU countries. I work and study, not really motivated in uni, but I am passing every exam without issues. I work in a brokerage house and make a pretty decent amount in my country, especially with such flexible hours and for a student (Spoiler alert: +-800EUR after tax). It cover's pretty much all my living expenses and my parents pay for studies. Basically I have a different official name of my position, but what I do is mostly first tier support. I have recently got a job offer from a TOP 10 banks by total assets and they offered me a very similar position, but in Madrid, Spain and I am not sure if I should go for it.
Some facts:
1. They offer me twice my salary right now, but Madrid is more expensive than where I am now, and if my calculations are correct, I will be left with plus/minus the same amount of spare money, as I do now.
- If I will leave for the job, I will have to drop my university (But I can comeback and start where I left). However I do not like it anyway, and I don not find anything useful there, except the paper that I will get in the end.
3.If I wont accept the offer, I will finish uni and will make 2kEUR in my company pretty easily + Consider that I live in a much cheaper city than Madrid.
-
Bank headquarters are located in another country, so it is more like a branch. I do not speak their language, however they like the fact that I speak 3 other languages and they might be useful.
-
I do not like hot weather, I just can't stand it, I would rather live in -40C than in a +30C environment.
My real concerns are:
6. If I will leave and my new position will not suit me and then I come back, I will most luckily not be greeted in the company that I left, and I will have to move back to my parents.
-
If I will accept the offer, can I expect to be promoted? I contacted HR and they mentioned transition to BO and HR, but that's not something I am interested in. I am really passionate more to the prop trading position or investment banker side, can this happen without a degree?
-
If I will not move out from here, I will most luckily stuck here, in Madrid there are definitely more opportunities in terms of financial markets and investments.
-
If I will accept the offer, my parents won't have to pay such huge amount of money for the uni.
-
I also wanted to move to the NYC someday, transition from the larger bank would definitely be more easier than where I am now. Or am I wrong and such transitions do not work IRL?
I probably know the answers myself, but I want somebody to say it.
Thank You.
