1.5-2 yrs IBD vs. PE Analyst after 1 year IBD
Currently, contemplating whether I should leave IB at GS London after 1 year and join a PE fund for an Analyst role or whether I should stay the usual 1.5-2 years before making the move.
Already know that I won't stay in IB for the long term and eventually want to move into PE, so generally happy to leave after 1 year but just afraid that not doing 1.5-2 years at GS will close some doors.
Background:
Got an offer to join as PE Analyst at a decent fund (~$7bn AUM), with a seemingly good culture, good track record and a sector focus that interests me (software & tech). Would be an Analyst for 2 years to learn all the skills needed (i.e. execution and modelling, sourcing, DD etc.), before either becoming Associate or leaving the fund to do something else (they gave me that option).
From a contingency planning point, I just want to make sure that I still have many exit ops, should I decide to leave after 2 years. Comps is secondary for me.

Can you just post it here
Would be helpful if you posted your take on here so others in a similar situation could also benefit from it
Post it here pussy

Why would you leave IB and be an analyst for 2 years when you can leave IB in a year and be an associate?
Was thinking about this as well and boiled down to the following:
- "easy" entry now vs. more competitive processes & more difficult interviews for Assoc roles
- don't feel as if I would learn that much on LBO modelling on the job in IB to be a competitive candidate (modelling skills now are ok but not extraordinary)
- want to move as soon as possible into an investment professional type of role because that's what I want to do in the long-term + barely surviving in IB atm
Would be willing to sacrifice the direct entry into an Assoc role for the opportunity to have a life again and do something I am interested in now already.
Look if you hate your life right now, take it. As simple as that, life is too short to stay in a role you don’t like.
What is your comp offer for the PE job?
i personally would take the PE gig knowing i can secure an associate position after 2 years and not having to stress about recruiting/ doing another year of banking .
£60k base + 30k bonus
Would be lower than my current base but comp is not as important to me if WLB is better :)
