Addressing concern with boss & got owned

Hey guys,

So I recently started an internship in REPE. And this week, my boss told me about a project she wanted me to do with marketing to Ultra-HNW clients based on my resume.

However my experience was only with HNW clients and was very limited in my past internship (did not exaggerate on CV) and I raised this concern to her. I told her that I'm more than willing to do it and figure it out but just that I didn't want to overpromise on being able handle this assignment and deliver great leads.

Instead I was told to reflect on why I am flagging this concern and should have sold her on how to target them... I guess I fucked up that one badly...

What would you guys have done and how should I handle this now?

Thanks.

I would have said I'll do it and then would have found a way to get it done.

Now: as she said, figure out ways to target them and sell her on them.

This, exactly. Not sure why you did that. What would I have done? If my boss asked me to do something, I would have gone and figured it out -- I think that's pretty natural. Put together something good and get back to her in a short timeframe. What should you do now? Exactly what I just suggested. Go beat the hell out of whatever she assigned you (the pitch or whatever, not the UHNW clients), then get back to her.

That should be standard procedure for this internship and in the future. Always. Also, I wouldn't recommend getting all apologetic about it. I probably wouldn't mention it and make it a point to show her that it was a one-time beginner's mistake by never letting it happen again.

On the bright side, you didn't get owned as bad as the real Paul George is in the NBA playoffs..

This is just a learning lesson. Next time, just get the job done on your own and ask your boss questions, if you have any, as you go along.
