Advice on learning O&G
Putting myself out here after reading a few similar posts on the topic. I’m currently working at a family office in Dallas as an analyst and have gotten a lot of exposure the past couple of years in drilling programs we participate in—from bigger players to smaller PE firms. I’ve done high level due diligence but keep it fairly limited to the information that is pertinent to our work (IRR, risks, meet with PE teams to review decks).
I’ve gained a keen interest in digging into the details on these O&G deals but want to get some insight on the best way to learn this stuff that can be applicable to potential exit opps for me. I know WSO has a course but would it make sense for me to take an IB focused course if I want to move into corporate development or try and work in with some of these smaller Infrastructure/Energy funds we work with?
any insight would be much appreciated.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems like you're on the right track with your interest in O&G deals. If you're considering a move into corporate development or working with smaller Infrastructure/Energy funds, the WSO courses could be a great resource for you.
The WSO Elite Modeling Package, for instance, offers 6 courses to Modeling Mastery, which could be beneficial for understanding the financial aspects of these deals. This package includes courses like Financial Statement Modeling, LBO Modeling, M&A Modeling, and Valuation Modeling.
If you're specifically interested in Private Equity, the Private Equity Interview Course could be a good fit. It includes 9 LBO Modeling Tests and more, which could be particularly useful if you're considering working with PE firms.
Remember, the key is to focus on the areas that are most relevant to your career goals. So, if you're leaning more towards corporate development, you might want to focus more on the M&A and Financial Statement Modeling courses. If PE is your goal, the LBO Modeling and PE Interview courses could be more beneficial.
And hey, don't forget to have fun while learning! After all, what's life without a little bit of monkeying around?
