Just saw this article about Steve Young, who is apparently working in PE and fairly good at it. Definitely happy to hear this since her was one of my favorite athletes growing up. That being said, it seems like a lot of athletes are just hired to impress investors and management teams. Are there any other examples of professional athletes that are actually good at investing?

I'd forgotten about John Cholish... I remember watching his first fight a long time ago. Didn't read through every bio but I don't think anyone else was a pro athlete in a sport as intense as MMA while working in finance, I gotta give him some props

Or Steve Young, Peyton Manning & Marshawn Lynch.
David Robinson has a firm called Admiral Capital Group, looks like PE and REPE. Which is named after his nickname from his playing days.
yea they mostly do REPE and have partnered with other PE firms for traditional corporate deals. Can't believe I forgot about him.
For someone like Robinson, I wonder how much he is actually involved in the investment business and how much he is just being used for investor relations and publicity.
TON of athletes in finance. Just varying levels of notoriety. Obvi Shaq isn't gonna be a Partner at Apollo.
But the guy that played at Stanford and was a 5th or 6th round pick that you never heard of.. that GS TMT gave an offer to is now in PE turns up if you really dig around. Also for former hockey players. Guys that busted out of the AHL or only played a season or 2 abroad
Shaq has a University of Phoenix MBA. I know it's not a target, but with networking he might be able to get an associate gig at KKR or TPG.

Always found it amusing when I saw guys currently on NFL rosters with updated LinkedIn profiles (and sometimes premium). Now I realize that they're probably using it to network into finance or whatever desired industry.
I know quite a few former hockey players in finance. Ivy League hockey to finance seems to be a fairly common jump.
This isn't surprising. It's simply a reflection of the finance world and that, ultimately in the end, your soft skills matter more than your technicals. If you have the $, network, and especially well-known, you already have the ingredients to succeed. You won't see one going into engineering lol.

I know in the CRE Brokerage community in Austin, most of the firms will hire on a token UT athlete.
I interviewed at steve young's fund - the partners there are remarkably bright. Though I did not get a chance to meet him, I am under the impression that he is not too bogged down with investments and investment operations and more on the "shaking hands" front. There's nothing wrong with that at all though, it's arguably just as important as anything else.
