Attend Wharton or reapply to HBS and GSB?

After applying to business school this cycle, I was accepted at Wharton but rejected from HBS and GSB without an interview.

I was just promoted to VP at a MF in NYC after a 3 year associate stint. Before that, I worked at a top group at a top BB. I attended a T10 undergrad where I graduated summa cum laude. I was a bit surprised I didn't come close to getting into HBS or GSB, but I guess I'm probably not as unique or impressive as I thought.

I'm unsure what I want to do with the rest of my life, and really want the time to take a step back and reflect. I don't want to close the door on large-cap PE or SM HF, and realize HBS / GSB candidates usually outperform students from Wharton when recruiting for those roles. I also think the HBS and GSB alumni networks are probably stronger overall and would be more helpful over the course of a 40-50 year career.

If I re-applied next year, I genuinely do think I'd be a stronger candidate. I've been promoted at work and my extracurricular involvement has gotten a lot stronger with real leadership responsibility. My test scores were already close to perfect, so not much room there to improve.

If you were in my position, what would you do? Would you send Wharton this fall, or reapply to HBS and GSB next year?

can you talk to the partner at your firm that holds the relationship with HBS / GSB and try to get him to call up admissions and get them to change that decision
